This book was published pre-war and at least one of the authors was a long-time advocate of lifting sanctions and ally of John Pilger. It's terrible on the Kurdish regions.

More up-to-date is Gilles Munier 'Iraq: an Illustrated History and Guide', although it lacks the details re hotels etc.

Either might be of use - and or interest - to someone visiting. But surely no-one would be mad enough to rely on either for decisions about where to travel and where to stay: for either you MUST have up-to-date information from people on the ground whom you trust.

This isn't bad for those going to the south of the island but it does have a little rant on how the the United Nations 'deplores' the Turkish Military etc so may not be so suitable for those visiting the North. It does have a giant map of the entire island and also 12 Tours around Cyprus, which unfortunately are all in the South. It's a shame you can't just buy a non-biased publication giving you the information you want.

Having lived in Oman for the past 4 years I am a keen climber and walker and frequent the Jebel Al Akhdars with friends and children from my school on their Duke of Edingburgh Award expeditions. Whilst the book is very informative of where the good walks are, the actual directions for completing the walks are sometimes far off the beaten mark. Many of the old routes are marked with paint and cairns and are obviously the correct routes to follow - something the book never hastens to add! Whilst some of the instructions are very informative there are times when huge gaps are missed out leaving the trekker to negotiate his own route.
