.In the Land of the Ayatollahs Tupac Shakur Is King: Reflections from Iran and the Arab World City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East by: Shahzad Aziz November 30, 2007 This is a tremendously easy book to read, written in an engaging but non pretentious fashion. Mostly travelogue, Aziz allows you to travel with him, meet the characters he meets and lead a little bit of their lives with them. The simple descriptions create powerful and lasting images and the text moves along in a fluid and entertaining fashion. The real surprise is when Aziz deviates from travelogue and begins to engage in an analysis of the subjects he stumbles upon. His insight is not revelatory for a liberal reader, but it is fresh and emotive. He does not shy away from tackling controversial topics although there is sometimes a restraint which leaves you with the impression that the author has much more to say, but not enough ... Vita Sackville-West is more concerned about little orange luggage labels and buying pet dogs than seeing any of the places she visits with an open mind. I recommend her novel 'The Edwardians' which is much closer to interesting non-fiction than this is, and Kevin Rushby for travel writing. His book 'Chasing the Mountain of Light' should not be out of print!
