We tried looking on the internet, Google maps etc and were worried that we weren't going to be able to find our way to our hotel in Muscat in the hire car as we drove from Dubai. This little gem of a map was a lifesaver. It looks a bit like a 'hotel' map since it has all the hotels and shopping centres marked on it, but that's what you need to find your way around this region. Don't be put off. Buy it!

This is a good attempt at trying to summarise everything (even literally down to the stereotypes!) which can easily go wrong if you include dates and details. As with most things ME, moving goalposts is the name of the game and impulsive decisions are the name of the game. I think the authors are fair and also knowledgeable about the region but as a Muslim I think I would like to see more books written from a Saudi/Islamic context as that gives the reader a more accurate perception. I'd say if you really want to know about Saudi, ask someone who's lived there for over 10 years. PS: this rating is simply based on my reading of material directed at Saudi (I skipped the other Gulf bits!).

This book covers all aspects of Oman, i have not been but will do due to this book.

Very informative for the novice traveller, Sandra Shields seems to have the knowledge and captured the culture and sites to a tee. Seems to be very well well informed in local knowledge. I wonder if the author will show me the way personally. Well recommended.

Just returned from Cyprus; wonderful place, great hospitality and terrific April weather. The holiday was completely made by our ability to walk using the Landscapes walking guide. This blue book has always had good press, but this is the first time I've used it in Cyprus. We had the latest update, since there is a new edition about to hit the shops, and the update gave us the latest jizz on all the places to visit. Troodos walks are sensational, but the walks in the area north of Paphos are fantastic. We stayed at Kathikas, and the update gave us info on new walks about to appear in the new edition in this area. Wonderful - every farmer we saw wanted to give us fruit from his groves. If you do not have any book of Persian cooking, this is the one to start with. You might find some spicies are diffcult to get, however, internet shops can help you. My favourate recipie is 'Aubergine and Lamb stew'. It takes a long time to cook according to this book, but I cook half of the steps the day before. One negative thing about this book is price. It is an expensive book, unfortunately.....

Good but as with all travel guides you need the latest edition and this one is a bit dated. Dubai is changing so fast you must keep up to date.I also prefer smaller size guides that will fit the pocket. Lonely Planet is a bit too large to carry especially when the temperature is ove 100 F. But if you plan to go you must do the Big Bus Tour. It is the best introduction to the city.
