Colin Gray is my lecturer on War, Peace and International Relations, and I can't speak highly enough of him. So although I may be biased, his book is as clear and concise and adept at explaining complex concepts and observations as he is in person. This book gives a highly insightful perception of War Peace and IR.

I am not a huge fan of motor racing, but despite this I enjoyed the first chapters of the book which is mostly about the early lives and racing careers of the saboteurs. The author really brings the people to life and makes the reader care about them.
Once he starts writing about their SOE activities the book comes to life. He must have done an enormous amount of research, because, despite reading many, many books on the SOE, I found a lot of new information.
Excellently researched.

Nine Lives is a book that once you pick it up you dont want to put it down because you realy get a feel as to what it must of been like during air combat. The excitement,concentration and the fear. I found Alan Deere to be a very likeable character who not only shows immense courage but humility too. If your an aviation buff and want something thats not too detailed then I'm sure you will find this book an enjoyable read.

You don't get them much better than this. It is an absolute classic. Foreign Office Mandarin turns MP, then joins the LRDG, the SAS and finally becomes "our man" in Yugoslavia with a brief to find "this Tito chap" that nobody really believes existed.

Sir Fitzroy certainly led a remarkable life, which he vividly describes, whilst at all times remaining understated. He comes across as a person who almost by accident stumbles into fortune and adventure and at times gets away with some of the most remarkable stunts. This gives him the gentlemanly and humourous appeal, which I am sure has led many to believe that he was a source of inspiration for Fleming's 007.

Much to the embarassment of many, including his superiors, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty rescued many from faschism and certain death in Rome during World War II. He did it all with a twinkle in his eye and a sense of humour that kept him sane throughout it all.

A man who is largely unrecognised in Ireland. I wonder if he would like the idea that he has a commemorative grove of trees and a poem dedicated to him by Brendan Kennelly. He was never a man who sought fame, just a man who thought he was doing a job, the job he became a priest to do and that it was only right to do it as best he could. With co-operation of many people around him he ensured the survival of many.

A touching portrait of a man who should be held as an example to many.

This book gives a good overview of circumstances effecting different sections of French society through the years of the occupation. Through largely statistical evidence it provides a history which tends to read very dryly and does not give the reader an emotional overview or development of general life through the occupation. Of course this is a very complex issue and each individual would have had their own experience; making it impossible to stereotype a typical experience, however this particular publication does prove to be a little too 'academic' to be classed as enjoyable. In terms of giving statistical evidence to support his work, Vinen does very well, but unfortunately these statistics make the book rather less readable than the work of Ian Ousby which I would recommend ... I was fortunate enough to study this text for my undergraduate degree, I am of German decent but ostensibly English. This text gives a documatary insight into the horror suffered by both Slavonic and Germanic peoples alike. If your looking for the entire documents look elsewhere here the authers present only the pertinent information. However do not presume that this leads in any way to a bias on the authers part, in my opinion they present the subject matter in an impartial light, which perhaps heightens the sense of the tragedy which is told within these pages. A word of caution, the description, particularly those provided by medical witnesses is graphic and not undistubing. The first time I read this book I coudlnt put it down (Apart from two incidents described that made me feel sick and forced me to close it). I have just finished reading it for the second time and although I still find it a great read I couldnt help feel parts of it were poorly written. Perhaps this is beacuse this isn't the full version translated from the german original or its just down to the skill of the author. In parts it reads like extremely grim fiction (almost cliche) rather than a first hand account of the front line and gives the feeling that the author has taken a few liberties here and there. After reading it again I have found myself asking questions about the validty of some parts. weather this is due to something being lost in the translation or the author giving it his own ...
