You don't get them much better than this. It is an absolute classic. Foreign Office Mandarin turns MP, then joins the LRDG, the SAS and finally becomes "our man" in Yugoslavia with a brief to find "this Tito chap" that nobody really believes existed.

Sir Fitzroy certainly led a remarkable life, which he vividly describes, whilst at all times remaining understated. He comes across as a person who almost by accident stumbles into fortune and adventure and at times gets away with some of the most remarkable stunts. This gives him the gentlemanly and humourous appeal, which I am sure has led many to believe that he was a source of inspiration for Fleming's 007.

This is such a great read. William has been through so much and it is incredible that he is till with us, let alone survive the War!! It is a book which sounds so farfetched that it makes you realise what a great man and what a brilliant life he has led!! He was a great inspiration to Steve McQueen I am sure, and I am so pleased that William took the time out to remember his brilliantly unique life!! Thanks!

This book gives a good overview of circumstances effecting different sections of French society through the years of the occupation. Through largely statistical evidence it provides a history which tends to read very dryly and does not give the reader an emotional overview or development of general life through the occupation. Of course this is a very complex issue and each individual would have had their own experience; making it impossible to stereotype a typical experience, however this particular publication does prove to be a little too 'academic' to be classed as enjoyable. In terms of giving statistical evidence to support his work, Vinen does very well, but unfortunately these statistics make the book rather less readable than the work of Ian Ousby which I would recommend over ... I realise that this is a very short review but I had just had to write and say to anyone who is doing GCSE history this is a very worthwhile book. It gives you bullet points to remeber for the exams which i think are going to be extremely useful for me.

Great book in every respect. Easy to pick up and read as the chapters are quite small. Really opened my eyes to what kinds of technology was around at that point. The electromagnetic Vampire part was fantastic. Lots of interesting questions are raised by the book, which prompts me to fnd out more.

This book is a rather lofty tome, but worth the read. It deals with the awful betrayal of the Polish Resistance, not only by the Soviet forces, but by the allies in the West. As someone who has a passion for all things historical I was aware of the Warsaw uprising, but I learnt so much more from this book. I knew about the fact the Soviets had waited for the Poles to exhaust themselves in the fight against the Wehrmacht, but I had no idea about the betrayal perpetrated in the the UK and US.

This book is rather weighty in places, and I found it hard going at times. However, I would recommend that you stick with it as the end result for the reader is not just a knowledge of events in Warsaw, but events that followed the war.
