The story of the cockleshell heros written by CE Lucas Phillips is another gem following on from his 'Greatest Raid of All' story on the raid on the docks at St Nazaire. This story about a raid on the harbour at Bordeaux by members of the Royal Marines in their small two man canoes is another classic.

The synopsis on the training and men involved gives us a great insight into how relatively ordinary off the street guys are moulded into a highly effective assault team that carries out one of the most daring raids of the war. The succesful raid achieves its objectives with the minimal of resources and manpower.

I was surprised to recently come across this book in Waterstones (more expensive than on Amazon!) and bought this book on a whim. My late father was a young stoker on HMS Rodney - joining in 1943 - after Bismark - but in time for D-Day and the Russian convoys. He left the ship following Victory in Europe and was in Vancouver ready to join the Pacific fleet when the war ended.

This is a wonderful history - accessible for non-specialists like myself. Following a brief introduction to the Admiral himself and the first ships that subsequently bore his name, the book focuses on the battleship laid down in the 1920s and finally broken up in 1948.

I picked this book up after reading ‘Auschwitz, The Nazis and The Final Solution’ by Laurence Rees because I was intrigued to find out what kind of monsters were involved in the ‘Final Solution’. This is the first one of the books I bought and I’ll be surprised if anything else I read will make me feel as disturbed.

Rudolf Hoess is probably one of the most calculating and evil men ever to walk the planet and the ease at which he wrote this book detailing his atrocities but yet failing to admit he did anything wrong makes me shudder. Since the changes of Curriculum 2000 were introduced to A-level studies, few comprehensive text books have been written to suit either AS or A2 in this field of history. This book is one of the few and it was a fantastic help for my A2 exam. It provided all the background reading I needed and explained all the concepts and theories I needed to know. Although it wasn't specific to my exam board and the exercises were different to my actual exam, to some students these will be helpful and can easily be ignored by the rest. My only wish is that it had been published a year earlier so I could have used it for my AS module too!

Maus took me by surprise with the depth of sickening revulsion I felt at the horrors which beset Spiegelman's family of Polish Jews. I attribute that to the medium, with the graphic portrayal of events leading to a much quicker and more immediate sense of the unimaginably awful conditions.

As with other such memoirs, there is, however, a strain of hope and plenty triumphs for the embattled human spirits encountered between the pages; and the author's depiction of his own Father (heroic in his resistance to the Nazi onslaught but very difficult to live with in later life) could hardly be termed sentimental. This is a superb resource for any student studying A-level history and in particular anyone who needs help in a question along the lines of who was the main instigator of the Final Solution. After using thissource to help with my coursework i believe i got an A or B. All quotes were attributed to the author via footnotes. What i liked abpout this book was that there was limited opinionistic interpretation throughout except, of course at the very end when the author makes his own conclusion. What also impressed me was the fact that even though i read the conclusion of Mr Farmer i didnt come to the same one. This shows how unbiased the author writes.
