. Where Eagles Dare
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Alistair MacLean
May 24, 1993
A group of allied soldiers are dropped by parachute into Germany in order to find a way inside Schloss Adler (the castle of the eagle), the combined headquarters of the German Secret Service and the Gestapo. They have to rescue Lieutenant General Carnaby, an American general who is the overall co-ordinator for Operation Overlord, the Second Front, before he talks.
Someone though is sabotaging their efforts; can a member of the six British and one American Special Forces team be a traitor? The commanding officer, Smith, has brought a woman with him too, a fact unknown to the other team members. Added to that are the problems of the elite Alpenkorps being stationed at the foot of the mountain and the Castle, built on the side of the ... Read More:

. Violette Szabo: The Life That I Have
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Susan Ottaway
December 19, 2002
Having been brought up on a diet of "Victory at Sea", "The World at War" and no end of stories and documentaries about it, I grew up in the 1960s and 1970 thinking that the war had rather been rammed down my throat. However, when I read "Carve her name with Pride", the story of Violette affected me like no other. I could barely think about it without a lump in my throat for a long while afterwards and for me this was *the* story about WWII. Susan Ottoway's welcome new biography attempts to provide us new insights into this very courageous woman, it also dispels a few myths that have grown up. Though I was pleased to see that one of the most surprising tributes to her courage really happened. During her fateful second mission, ... Read More:

. D-Day with the Screaming Eagles
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: George Koskimaki
October 31, 2006
I have read quite a lot of books which portray the American Airborne involvement on D-Day.This book by George Koskimaki ranks as one of the best.Probaly because Mr Koskimaki,an original screaming eagle himself, made the D-Day drop with the 101st Airborne that fateful night. His actual first hand account from the build up to D-Day,through to the actual drop itself and beyond is superb. If like me you wanted to know what happened on that night, when scores of Paratroopers were misdropped and scattered all over the Normandy countryside, then this book is for you.Eyewitness accounts are given by the Commanders, the platoon sergeants, medics, chaplains, and the lowly privates. This book is a narrative which takes us through some of the most important days in American history.

. Whicker's War
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Alan Whicker
June 05, 2006
Many people will have been familiar with Alan Whicker from his decades of jet-setting, globe-trotting Whicker's World programmes; entertainingly, wittily and educationally bringing the world of travel into our homes on TV for British and other audiences.
When, after an absence that's been far too long, he reappeared on our screens again recently, to present a two-part documentary of his own experiences in Italy during the Second World War, many were happily surprised to see him still alive and going strong. And more importantly, we were treated to a sublime piece of television from this master of presentation and narration. The book is even better, because it provides more anecdotes and background on the campaign, and yet is still written in that informative, ... Read More:

. Tigers in the Mud: The Combat Career of German Panzer Commander Otto Carius (Stackpole Military History Series): The Combat Career of German Panzer Commander ... Carius (Stackpole Military History Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Otto Carius
January 15, 2004
Carius served in several tanks throughout the war, from the small Panzer 38(t) to the Tiger I and briefly, the huge Jagdtiger. He fought against the Russians and the Americans, although the majority of the book is mainly concerned with his 'Tiger' actions against the Russians. It is an interesting book for anyone who likes personal accounts of armoured warfare during the Second World War.
Personally, whilst I enjoyed the book, I thought it was a bit too sanitized for my tastes, as regards his re-telling of the various actions. He does not go into great detail about them, perhaps in an effort not to seem to be gloryifying his many successes, but I felt that in reading it, I was never really 'there' with him, if you know what I mean.
Many other memoirs recount the ... Read More:

. The Myth of the Blitz
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Angus Calder
August 13, 1992
As a history student with a keen interest in the subjects that this book covers I gladly greeted the opportunity to read this book as part of a module for my second year at University. However I found the way the author had written this book to be difficult to read despite my perseverance to the end. Furthermore his idea that the myth of the blitz was wholly a product of propaganda and that in fact Britain was made up of anti-Semitic collaborators who were one step away from crumbling and who relied almost totally on American support was deeply flawed. It seems a pity to me that the author missed the opportunity to write a genuinely interesting and different piece of work and instead produced a sensationalist piece that despite selling copies will soon end up in second hand shops.
