Gus Gilbert, had free access to all the defendents during the entire Nuremberg trials. He spent much time in discussion with all the Nazi defendents, Goering, Ribbentrop, Hess, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Frank, Frick, Sauckel, Speer, Schacht, Funk, Papen, Neurath, Schirach, Seyss-Inquart, Streicher, Keitel, Jodl, Doenitz and Fritzsche. Robert Ley had committed suicide in his cell prior to the trial.

The book is a record of the defendents thoughts and a diary of conversations and observations. It is facinationing. Author Gilbert was a psychologist by profession and also acted as a sympathetic ear and councillor for some of the defendents and in some cases really gained their confidence. A disappointing book, given the exciting subject matter. The different authors recounting their experiences gives it a disjointed feel and some are clearly better story tellers than others. The precise, repetitive 'Civil Service' language is wearing to read.

I am quite impressed with the text of Gazala 1942 - Rommel's greatest victory. This campaign book fits very nicely between Tobruk 1941 (Campaign 80) and El Alamein 1942 (Campaign 158) and together they bring a very clear picture of the desert war. Especially since Gazala begins with an overview of Crusader that lifted the siege of Tobruk and ends at the First Battle of El Alamein.

Ken Ford manages to paint a clear picture of events and captures the highlights well as the reasons for them, the defiant and brave stands of the 150 Brigade of the 50 "Northumbrian" Division and the Free Franch Brigade at Bir Hacheim. Mazower describes the german occupation in Greece accurately and in detail. However, his position on the divisions produced in the greek society by the occupation is somewhat unbalanced and with a bias in favor of leftist/communist points of view. For example, it is dissapointing that the town of Meligalas is not mentioned at all in the book.

There are few first hand accounts in English of the fighting in France in May and June 1940, as the French army collapsed and the Germans marched into Paris. Paul Richey, a pilot with RAF No1 Squadron flying Mk 1 Hurricanes, describes the success of the Hurricane against overwhelming odds, with handfuls of RAF fighters being deployed against massed German bombers and their accompanying fighters. No I Squadron performed amazingly, by the time it was withdrawn from France it had shot down 155 German aircraft, 114 of them in ten days. The Squadron had three pilots killed.
