. Third Reich Victorious: Alternate Decisions of World War II
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
from: Presidio Press
March 15, 2008
It used to be that historians looked down upon anybody who dared to write a 'what if' scenario for the public. They thought this was a mere parlour game; the domain of journalists and other hacks who'd failed (in their eyes) to become 'proper' academic scholars.
Now of course the boot is on the other foot, and such counter-factual writings (to give their posh title) or 'what ifs' are very much in vogue.
Third Reich Victorious is nice romp through World War 2 (mainly the European theatre of operations) with separate chapters on a whole range of battles and campaigns, and how things might have turned out differently. What I liked about this book is that the scenarios were not too outlandish, and the authors stuck to ... Read More:

. The Korsun Pocket: The Encirclement and Breakout of a German Army in the East, 1944
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Niklas Zetterling, Anders Frankson
August 09, 2008
This is the autobiography of a Canadian who just cannot get enough of flying. He is already a proficient pilot by his late teens. To earn his keep, he goes on to fly in the RAF and eventually finds himself a test pilot and later, the CO of a Polish fighter squadron during the Battle of Britain. The Poles held a vendetta for Hitler and were more than a handful for him to control. Perhaps the more interesting parts of his story are his test pilot exploits. He tells of his nerve-wrecking experience of testing with barrage balloons, where he flys, quite literally, into them and still manages to land his damaged craft for the scientists to inspect! Needless to say, losses in the test pilot squadrons are very high, but he survived to continue ... Read More:

. Arnhem (Pen & Sword Military Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: R.E. Urquhart
January 17, 2008
Urquharts account of the battle comes across as honest and straight forward.
He is not trying to hide the fact that he could do very little to influence the battle that was based on a plan that started to fall apart even before the first troops landed. You get a good look at the business of a division commander but also the odds and ends that make this a personal account. Fortunately I did not detect any attemps by Urquhart to "dress up" his decisions and actions leading up to and throughout the battle.
At times the "stiff upper lip" attitude is laid on a little too generously to my liking, but I imagine that was the way they delt with things back then.
Seeing things from the generals perspective, no wonder I miss a good deal of ... Read More:

. The Berlin Diaries, 1940-45
City Travel Guides > Books > Origins
by: Marie "Missie" Vassiltchikov
October 07, 1999
These are the absorbing wartime diaries of Marie "Missie" Vassiltchikov, a White Russian who worked in a German foreign office in Berlin from 1940-45. Idealistic, vivacious and observant, Missie was a diarist of the first order, and her book is both a detailed portrait of 1940's Berlin and a gripping account of political conspiracy. She wrote her diary in English and is very detailed throughout with occasional humour. Her accounts of the bombing raids are so descriptive you can almost imagine being there yourself, brushing off the dust. Missie was also unwittingly in the centre of the most famous plot which led to the failed assassination of Hitler at the Wolf's Lair. Towards the end of the war she became a nursing Helferin before finally fleeing the ... Read More:
