I'm just over half way through this book and I'm very disappointed. I don't think Stephen Ambrose is a very good writer, he seems to repeat himself quite a bit and the personal accounts are handled in a rather clunky manner. I started reading this book after reading his Pegasus Bridge account and although that had the same style of writing at least he didn't spend the entire time comparing American superiority against British inferiority. No, after checking out other reviews here, I'm moving on to something new and will wait for Rick Atkinsons third book in his liberation trilogy or I'll read Max Hastings 'Overlord'. This book is simply amazing. The first chapters describe the development of machines and tactics that later on played important part during the Battle. It makes the whole book much easier to understand. From Home Chain to fighter planes, from vic formation to German tactics - it gives you lots of details. Later on the author describes the actual combat action, aims, targets etc. In later chapters you will find info about accuracy and effectiveness of pilots. It shows how aces differed from regular pilots.
At the same time it is a book that you will be reading very quickly and still wanting to go a little further. There's no time for boredom.

This book was found to contain a vast amount of relevant information concerning the implications of the Second World War upon a society which was undergoing a huge upheaval in its approach to cultural, social and even feminist issues. It was at times vague and descriptive, yet beyond this it produces a very solid foundation in which to tackle this period of history. It is personally felt as a full-time student that this book would benefit anyone studying at AS level through to degree level and possibly higher. GO Out and Buy IT!!!

I have read a few books on WWII. This book will draw you into the lifes of the men and women who were there. It covers the start of the war right upto the War with Japan and VE Day. What I found interesting about this book is that it covers hundreds of different accounts from the different people who experienced the war. This book was difficult to put down. If you like WWII then this is a must read !!

I am not a huge fan of the sort of military history books that concentrate on strategy and campaigns without showing what war is really like on a human level. It's the stories people tell that catch the imagination and help us to remember what war was really like for those involved in the fighting. Rod Bailey has searched the Imperial War Museum's archives to uncover and weave together some fascinating narratives from people who operated behind enemy lines all over the world during the Second World War. I first read this when I was 12 in the early '70's, and snapped this up as soon as I saw it has been re-printed.

Gibson started right at the beginning of the war in Bombers, did a stint in nightfighters (he was due for rest, but wouldn't accept the genuine break from the war that his superiors wanted him to have), then went back to Bombers through to his being killed in a raid over Germany after he returned to front line duty post Dambusters' raids.

This autobiographical book chronicles the aerial bombing campaign, and, as well as recording Gibson's personal experiences, the people he knew, and some of the scrapes that they got up to on base, charts the developing sophistication of RAF Bomber Command's tactics and aircraft.

It supports AQA, OCR and Edexcel Exam boards AS/A Level and gives the necessary jump from GCSE to AS to A Level.

This book is what text books aimed at there intended audience should be like, once again Hinemann have got it right again.

It even provides some further reading for GCSE students, but GCSE students should primarly stick to there exam board accredited exam books, only to use this for further reading.
