. The Pillars of the Earth
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Ken Follett
April 06, 2007
The strength of the book is the detailed description of the development of a cathedral and its impact on the prosperity of a town through a page-turning narrative and fictional characters. It is a fairly easy read on a difficult subject. It covers the civil war during the 12th century (Stephen and Maud) The downside is it is not a very memorable read. When my book club recommended it, I did not even remember I had aready done so! I certainly would not say don't read it - especially if you are doing GCSE architecture or medieval history. It does bring the period to life more than a textbook would and that can spur you on to learn more. However, it is not a great piece of historical fiction.

. 1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: George Orwell
January 29, 2004
It is tempting with the `wisdom' of the twentieth century to dismiss as irrelevant a book guilty of false prophecy. However the achievement of George Orwell's masterpiece is not to be found in the accuracies of his predictions, but in its warning about the danger of power unchecked and the lengths to which those in power will go in order to remain there.
We are presented with a vision of the future (now our past) in which the world is divided amongst the totalitarian superpowers of Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. Our story is set in a London controlled by `The Party' - who presence is felt by the ubiquitous Big Brother and its enforcement arm the Thought Police; told through the figure of Winston Smith: a lonely and silently dissident low-level ... . A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Eckhart Tolle
June 29, 2006
I found this too wordy and deep for a simple soul such as myself however I did as advised on the Oprah site and sat with 2 marker pens in different colours to underline that which I understood and that which I didn't. Needless to say one colour got a heck of a bashing!!
I've given it 3 stars though because I did actually get some really good bits out of it which I jotted down on the spare blank pages at the back (in my own words so I would understand later) and for that it was worth reading/buying.
What I am most chuffed about however is reading a review by Paul Chipperfield (lower down) recommending Cheri Huber's book which as he said is much kinder to us mere mortals and he is sooooo right!! Cheri Huber writes in a way I can understand and ... Read More:

. The Good Study Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Andy Northedge
February 15, 2005
I used this book years ago and found it extremely helpful. Now, as my second child is about to embark on a college career, where else should I advise her to turn but to this admirable little text.
Of course, the book is a little outdated but the principles hold good. Despite the modern trends in education, and particularly at the college level, little within the book has diminished in relevance.
Northedge is especially good at providing succinct direction in clear and lucid language, hardly surprising as the target audience is the adult learner who has been away from school or study for a number of years. In fact, I would consider this to be a major selling point and the continued success of the Open University in Great Britain is a testament to the work that ... Read More:

. "Have You Seen...?": a Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films Including Masterpieces, Oddities and Guilty Pleasures (with Just a Few Disasters)
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: David Thomson
September 25, 2008
"Early on as I watched films and tried to read about them, I found that I valued broad comments on the medium...more than intense and reverend scrutiny of particular films composed by critics who treated a Nicholas Ray film as if it might have been a sculpture by Bernini, or Hamlet."
How odd that in the month that Sight and Sound (in its Who Needs Critics issue) includes this comment from David Thomson, his new book is published, a book that consists of "a personal introduction to 1,000 films" or in other words a not quite reverend but certainly intense scrutiny of particular films.
Having made that snidey point, what does the book do and who is it for? Well, each of Thomson's chosen films has one page to itself and approximately 500 words, but no pictures. The ... Read More:

. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (Definitions)
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: John Boyne
February 01, 2007
This is a very difficult book to review, for several reasons.
Firstly, the blurb of this book simply invites you to go on a journey with Bruno, a nine year old boy. The publishers make it clear that having advance knowledge of any detail of Bruno's journey `would spoil the reading of the book'. This is the way I read the story and I have to agree with the publishers. I think that prior knowledge of the plot would have activated my critical faculties and spoilt my reading of the book. I would have read as a critic, rather than a reader. So, if you really want to experience the power of this tale then you should not seek to know any more details about the plot. In fact, you probably shouldn't read this review any further! Be reassured, though: read this way the tale is engaging ... Read More:
