Let me just say one thing; I am an avid reader. I love books. Whenever I begin reading, I cannot stop halfway through, even if it is an absolutely awful book. However, this book went beyond awful. It was so far past awful it made me want to throw up (and I wish I were exaggerating). Not just because the book is basically a doctoral thesis on human psychology wrapped in a plot stolen from 'The Coral Island', but mainly because it makes no sense.

Let's start at the beginning: The arrival. The pilot manages to safely land the plane on the one island in the middle of nowhere, while the cockpit is on fire. This was the first 'pop psychology' book I ever bought, and it's a well-thumbed classic. Upbeat and practical, it's helpful for changing your mindset as well as your habits. A good mix of psychobabble and practical exercises. I found it especially helpful when leaving university, and having to make what felt like big choices about what to do next. The book helped me realise that all my choices could be positive and made me feel less afraid of missing out on something.

Sloman has excelled himself by producing a book on economics that is bright, colourful, well layed out and interesting to read.

I viewed economics as a boring subject until i picked up and read sloman. The great thing about this book is that you can just pick it up and read. It is well written in a concise and informative way that is not to technical yet contains all the information. This is backed up at the end of every section by a bullet point summary that covers the entire section.

Here at PPL Training in York we used to use the old JTL Level 2 plumbing book for our City & Guilds NVQ level 2 courses. This lastest book combines both the NVQ side and the tech cert (6129) side, which is a good step forward as BOTH qualifications must be taken to gain a NVQ 2 in Plumbing.

The book is clearly laid out with individual chapters on the course structure. Errors from the previous versions have been corrected and along with clear colour diagrams makes this book suitable for both young and old alike. We at PPL train a mixture of age groups and find this book a very valuable reference and learning resource.

Taking the book with me on the bus or at the Waitrose checkout or at the barbers shop or Sussex University its title attracts attention. In the brief encounters which follow I enjoy speaking to parents whose infants obviously enjoy what's going on with the adults. I'm able to affirm that the love care and attention they give the child in those early years do make a difference and will set her up for life. To older people, and I am elderly, I speak of the 'forgiving space' that Sue Gerhart gives me in which to understand my chequered life. As Kierkegaard said 'Life must be lived foward, but it can only be understood backwards.'

We read books for many reasons and sometimes for comfort.
This book is a comforting book, to read while snuggled up in front of the fire on a cold day, or under the blankets on a Saturday afternoon.

The perennial problem of the poor who need work to provide food, clothes and a shelter is experienced by Miss Pettigrew and fortunately (and because of her determination and strength) she finds the right job.
This requires fortitude and a moral fibre which is most admirable and all is rewarded at the end, like a true fairy story.

The fact that there is a 'tongue in cheek' tone to the novel makes it real, and not a syrupy little tale.
It is set in a certain time in London's history but it rings true of today as well.

This is one of my favourite books and one I constantly re-read. I love all the characters, especially the way they are neither beautiful or perfect people. But the main reason I love this book is the character of Rochester and the way he loves Jane. He is definitely my favourite hero of all time.
