. The Selfish Gene
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Richard Dawkins
March 16, 2006
Dawkins writes that "the argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes" (p.xxi) and that "We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes" (p.xxi). Yet, according to him, this book "is not science fiction; it is science" (p.xxi)!
Dawkins contrives to overlook the twin discoveries that:
1. the observable traits of organisms are mostly conditioned by the interactions of many genes;
2. most genes have multiple effects on many of these traits.
Dawkins transfers characteristics with which he is familiar from human behaviour on the macro-level to the inanimate components, "genes", of which we are physically ... Read More:

Notes From An Exhibition synopsis from Amazon:
Renowned Canadian artist Rachel Kelly -- now of Penzance -- has buried her past and married a gentle and loving Cornish man. Her life has been a sacrifice to both her extraordinary art and her debilitating manic depression. When troubled artist Rachel Kelly dies painting obsessively in her attic studio in Penzance, her saintly husband and adult children have more than the usual mess to clear up. She leaves behind an extraordinary and acclaimed body of work -- but she also leaves a legacy of secrets and emotional damage it will take months to unravel. . Shantaram
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Gregory David Roberts
March 24, 2005
An amazing epic journey that had me wanting to read on. But what a horrible, vile man, a bit too up himself and trying a bit too hard to impress with his descriptions - think he's after an award. If I read one more time about someone's eyes being the colour of sand held in your hand as the sun sets over the desert or some such, I think I'd scream. And what is 'sorrowing' and 'hungering'? Get over yourself, man! Maybe children in school should have to read this as part of an anti-drugs programme - don't do heroin or you'll turn into an eejit like this.
The people and the places and the adventures are amazing and worth reading for that but I don't think it'll do much for the Indian tourist industry. All in all, read it but borrow someone else's copy.

. The Game
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Neil Strauss
December 06, 2007
What a discovery!!! I bought this book as part of some research for my own book and I was very pleasantly surprised.
I never made the connection that Mr Strauss was the co-author of the much lauded Motley Crue's "The Dirt".
Ok, the stories in this book may seem a bit stretched or hard to believe, but hey, it's Americans we are talking about. What I have to say is that reading this book made me look back on my failures and successes at picking women, and it was almost uncanny to read word by word where I went right and wrong.
The Game is a bit of a cross between Queer Eye For The Straight Guy cum Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus cum any rock and roll tale of debauchery you care to think of.
Interesting but not recommendable for old ... Read More:

. Engleby
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Sebastian Faulks
March 27, 2008
I love the chatty first person style of this book which keeps wandering around and going off at huge tangents, although always eventually coming back to make the original point. The narrator is very precise in his writing and, at the same time, has the ability to gloss over areas and be as vague as possible.
Hearing only one side of a story like this gives a very sinister impression of the action as information is skipped and sometimes missed completely, leaving the reader to guess whether or not this has been done on purpose or the narrator just isn't aware.
Mike is an unlikeable man with sociological problems which are clear from the beginning of the book - although the reasons behind them only develop gradually.
I like the historical context. The story is not about the times ... Read More:

. Instant Confidence (Book and CD)
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback
by: Paul McKenna
January 16, 2006
I was deeply cynical of this book at first because it sounds a bit dipsy and the actions involved make you feel more than a bit silly, esspecially sitting down to be hypnotised. But the CD is quite interesting because it does change the way you think - even though it may not make you truly confident in the conventional sense. I think what the CD does is give you access to a different persona which you can fit into...you imagine someone you know who is very confident (choose carefully because this works, bizarely) until ones true authentic self (ego) emerges and develops. After a month or so I found myself somewhat more confident esspecially in job interviews for example. And these days I feel about 100 times more confident than I was two years ago - and I do feel happy to express who I am. Can my ... Read More:
