. Before I Die
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Jenny Downham
April 10, 2008
I have just finnished this book and I write this review through tears. In the day it took me to read I have laughed, cried, felt uplifted and humbled.
This is the story of 16 year old Tessa who is dying of terminal cancer. In her last months she makes a list of 10 things she wants to do before she dies (this includes falling in love and saying yes to everything for one whole day). Tessa goes through a range of emotions including anger (why her?) but the overriding feeling I got from her was an amazing spirit. She notices things that you and I forget to notice - the colour of leaves, the sound of a thunder storm, sunshine reflecting in a tea cup. These are the things that make her feel alive and she embraces them in a way that most ... Read More:

. 3 Para
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Patrick Bishop
June 02, 2008
Patrick Bishop has now written several accounts of specific units or services in wartime, including the excellent "Fighter Boys" and "Bomber Boys", both about WW2 British fliers.
At first glance, this foray into contemporary conflict doesn't look promising; the paperback version is decorated with tawdry tabloid marketing blurb (and the statutory McNab/Ryan rave review) which makes it seem like another of the sensationalist glorifying accounts of recent conflicts that now seem to be cluttering the bookshelves of the nation.
Fortunately, Bishop is a better writer than that, so I persisted and was rewarded with a fascinating account of the British Army in Afghanistan, which focuses on the detail of day to day fire-fights without ... Read More:

. My Favourite Wife
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Tony Parsons
August 04, 2008
I read one of Tony Parson's books years ago and thought it was OK. This was going cheap so I picked it up somewhere - and it's just like the other one! The main male character is totally unlikeable; self-obsessed, selfish, self-justifying - and the others are just cardboard cut-outs: all very predictable, from the perfect, understanding wife, to the sad, but brave, Chinese mistress. That would be bad enough. But Parson's writing style drives me nuts: it's so self-conscious and trite, and just full of empty cliches. And it reads so obviously as though he has one eye on the film rights - it almost has scene directions for a producer!
I won't be reading any more of Parsons - I'm afraid the stories are just too repetitive and predictable. There is no ... Read More:

. The Rules of the Game
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Neil Strauss
July 03, 2008
I read, and absolutely loved, 'The Game' by the same author, Neil Strauss so I was looking forward to reading his second book, The Rules of The Game. Overall I would say that I enjoyed the book, and would recomend it, however there were some flaws, and it definitely wasn't as good as The Game.
Strauss attempts to deliver a one size fits all dating remedy for men across the world and the result is quite hit and miss. Some of the 'missions' that the book adivises one to attempt are pretty pointless, and will not be relevant for a lot of people. I also agree with some of the other reviews which mention the comic book style stories at the back of the book. These are quite fun to read but are nothing amazing, and they certainly don't offer much in the ... Read More:

. Mister Pip
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Lloyd Jones
January 10, 2008
I bought this book by chance and what a delight it turned out to be. While, at times, disturbing, the book was a gread read and I'd strongly recommend it. I've now gone out and bought other books by the same author to see if they compare. I felt for all the characters, found the story to be sad and intriguing, while at the same time I enjoyed the whole approach. Read this book!

. Crime
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Irvine Welsh
July 03, 2008
I doubt this review will give away much more than you can infer from the others, least I hope it won't.
As a review above says, it's a book I found difficult to put down - at first for the promising start: picking up the story of a previous Welsh acquaintance, and one whose previous description was from a mouth tainted by madness. The setting held much intrigue, also.
But by the end I couldn't put it down for another, far worse reason. Where were the twists? Even mild ones? Get to the end quick to reveal what's been building up then: a Massive twist... Nope. Nothing.
It's pretty well put - I enjoy Welsh's way of telling a story - unfortunately there really wasn't one. He's Good. They're Bad. He Wins. The characters he meets are ... Read More:
