. What to Expect the Toddler Years (What to Expect)
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Heidi E. Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, Sandee E. Hathaway
March 01, 1996
This is a book to turn to for help on every aspect of parenting small children. It's well laid out, easy to find specific information, and concise without being dry. It covers everything from developmental stages, to healthy eating (including recipe ideas), childhood diseases, immunisation and first aid, helping your child develop ethics and good values. It's a hefty tome, reflecting a vast amount of knowledge gathered by the two authors over many years, and it was my crutch!
You may want to buy additional guides to parenting if you are struggling with a particular aspect of parenting, particularly the emotional and behavioural aspects, but this may be the one book that you turn to constantly until your child is 3.

. Not Dead Enough
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Peter James
November 22, 2007
This was the first Peter James novel I have read, and it really didn't disappoint in any area! The plot was fast, the attention to detail superb, and I just didn't want to put the book down.
The character descriptions were so spot on, especially 'Potting' the un-PC DC! The frustrations of the Police doing all they can to outwit a serial killer were true to form, the chase to catch him had me on the edge of my seat ( first time ever in a book) if this is your first PJ book, you will not be left in any doubt buy his others! I am!
Brilliant!!!

. Revolutionary Road
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Richard Yates
December 13, 2007
There are few writers that can match Yates and this story, of the few I've read (I've resisted the desperate urge to devour them all too quickly) excels beyond so many other writer's work. The comparison drawn with Fitzgerald is right but I would say that Yates is better, more consistent. If you find Fitzgerald frustrating, Yates will show you why better than anyone; if you love Fitzgerald, you will worship this! If you like your books beautifully moving, exquisitely sad and sensual with sharp, dark humour that bites, then it doesn't get better than this. Yates' writing never puts a foot a wrong and from the outset you know you are in safe hands. It's one that shifts your perspective on life and left me fizzing for months, thankful that I found it and ... Read More:

. Now, Discover Your Strengths: How to Develop Your Talents and Those of the People You Manage
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Marcus Buckingham, Donald O. Clifton
June 20, 2005
The idea of the book is to help you find your talents, build your strengths, which will in turn, improve your performance.
Building your strengths is indeed somthing that is often overlooked, as most of the time we seek to improve our weaknesses- that's a point well taken- and a good reason to buy the book. However two more things also need to be mentioned. First, why can't we work on building both our strengths AND our weaknesses? In other words, why do we have to necessarily pick just one? I feel that many weaknesses can be improved upon.
Secondly, discovering your talents and doing what you're good at may not necessarily improve your performance. Why? Because there are lots of things we're good at, but still hate to do nonetheless. ... Read More:

. Neris and India's Idiot-proof Diet: From Pig to Twig
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: India Knight, Neris Thomas
January 03, 2008
I can see how this might work for some people, but it definitely wont work for me. I have IBS which is triggered by dairy amongst other things, and a lot of these recipes have things that I cant eat suxh as butter and cream, although they do sound tasty.
However, my main concern with this book is the misleading information. Reference to good fats in butter and double cream, in my opinion, is complete nonsense. The fats found here are saturated fats, the bad kind. The 'good fats', or fatty acids, that are an essential part of our diet are found in foods such as nuts, avocados, olive oil and oily fish, NOT butter and cream. I think Neris and India should have put a bit more research into this before misleading their readers.
That said, there ... Read More:

. A Killing Frost
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: R.D. Wingfield
October 09, 2008
Its sad that this will be the last Frost book but lovely to be able to say that Mr Wingfield went out on a high. This is the real Frost, not the somewhat sanitised TV version, rude, crude and full of piss and vinegar. Frost and his nemesis, Superintendent Mullett, battle it out to the end in a multilayered story that makes one laugh and cringe in equal amounts.

. The Lovely Bones
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Alice Sebold
June 06, 2003
This was an easy read and held my attention long enough that it became a very fast one, too. I read, more or less, everything and anything, but The Lovely Bones wasn't one I was itching to read and probably wouldn't have been read at all if it hadn't been for all the hype and a bargain carboot buy. (Incidentally, you can tell which books are the result of media hype because of what you find at our local carboot. In my town, there is no book shop, but almost every box of books had a book by Dan Brown, Jody Picoult or Alice Sebold in.)
The story itself was OK, in a shrug, pull-a-face sort of way. I recommended it to my Mum, who loves these sorts of grim-reality books, and said she could keep it. So make what you will of that. At least, like some books I`ve read in the past, I ... Read More:

. India (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...
There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.
Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.
