I have recently been diagnosed with insulin resistance, and told I needed to follow a low GI diet. A recipe book created by a chef who was also diagnosed as insulin resistant seemed like an obvious choice, but I was very disappointed for several reasons.

First, most of the recipes do not seem practical for everyday living. Many of them have long cooking times and need perishable or unusual ingredients, and therefore need forward planning.

Second, I feel there is not enough information to enable the reader to make their own low GI recipes. There is GI table in the front, but over-simplified (for my tastes) into low, medium or high GI and not containing that many foods. Also, bread in particular may be low, medium ... Read More:

I never read this book when I was a boy, and my children missed out on it too. I read it for the first time recently, and this weekend tried it out on my two grandchildren aged five and seven. They've never heard of Ted Hughes, and don't know what a poet laureate is, but they know a good story when they hear one. They came down from the ceiling, sat still and quiet, listened spellbound for the duration, then went happily off to sleep. The next 'night' I only had to mention The Iron Man and they were ready for it. What more could you ask from a children's book? I have been fascinated with passing time (if it does pass) and how our(my?) perception of it fluctuates. Steve does a really great job of not rocking any of my own personal prejudices whilst adding interesting insights so I can't help but like and recommend the book. This is a readable not a reductionist scientific book but neither is it "New Age" (thank God). It would have got five stars but I was a little thrown by the passages on precognition. It could have been hinted at as a possibility and would have strengthened the other arguments in the book but, because precognition is laboured a little, it tends to drag down rest. I recently attended a two-day course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 as part of my conversion to digital photography and digital imaging. At the end of that course the students were all given a copy of this book which contains a training CD Rom. As I was already booked onto the "advanced course" in 14 days time, I eagerly put the CD into my computer to practise what I had learned. Only then did I discover the CD would not work without my having first purchased and installed the full Adobe Photoshop CS3 software.

Its sad that this will be the last Frost book but lovely to be able to say that Mr Wingfield went out on a high. This is the real Frost, not the somewhat sanitised TV version, rude, crude and full of piss and vinegar. Frost and his nemesis, Superintendent Mullett, battle it out to the end in a multilayered story that makes one laugh and cringe in equal amounts.

I bought this book after doing 1-to-1 classes for over 3 months with a very good and inspiring instructor in the Body Control Method. I have benefited considerably especially with regard to general quotidian painlessness, greater flexibility and a fully mobile neck, which has all but eliminated headaches for me.

The book now serves as a good aide-memoire for specific exercises, as I am wont to forgetting the names and remembering only the exercises, which makes it difficult for me to write my exercise diary. More importantly, the book is very helpful in building a work-out plan for the 4 weekdays when I do not have my 1-to-1 lesson.

these books are definitely my favourite books! and i've read an awful lot of books. they are so brilliantly original and although some people see parallels with lord of the rings, Narnia and Harry Potter, i think that there is no truth in this whatsoever and those people completely misunderstand the meaning behind names and the plot. i've recommended them to all my friends and not once has anyone failed to talk to me after reading them with astonished expressions. i've just finished the singing and it doesn't dissapoint. i can't wait for the next series of books alison croggon writes! this book will have you thinking and dreaming about the characters long after you've reached the end!
