How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals ... . Brave New World
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Aldous Huxley
December 06, 2007
I find with most 'classic' books, the hype is more than the substance and again Brave New World falls into that category.
It is quite an easy read - except the constant Shakespeare quotations towards the end, but it is a novel that I feel fails to take a great idea and develop it totally - the end is a big let down for instance.
I am glad that I read it to understand why it holds such attention after all these years but it isn't a book that I feel I could recommend.

. Not Dead Enough
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Peter James
November 22, 2007
This is the worst book I have read in the past five years. The plot crawls along predictably but unbelievably. The dialogue sounds unauthentic. The characters are wooden and stereotyped. There is gratuitous product placement throughout. Everyone's car and mobile phone is lovingly described. Crime fiction for idiots. Avoid at all costs.

. Purple Hibiscus
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
February 07, 2005
My sister recommended Purple Hibiscus to me sometime last year. However, I was reluctant to read the book because I was not sure that it could live up to Half a Yellow Sun, Adichie's other book. In hindsight, I was right.
The novel is narrated by Kambili Achike, the fifteen-year old daughter of a wealthy Nigerian businessman. The book begins with a description of her family life: Her wealthy father, Eugene Achike, whom she called Papa, had made good in life. He had numerous factories and a newspaper, which took an uncompromising stand on the corruption of the ruling elite. To cap it all, he was a philanthropist par excellence, supporting many causes.
Beneath the respectable veneer, however, all is not well. Her father, supporter ... Read More:

August 04, 2008
Waited eagerly for this and like everyone else I wasn't disappointed. Read it quickly to find out what happened next then slowed down as I didn't want to finish it! There had better be a third instalment.
Only gripe, why not put a few patterns in the back - cupcakes, blowsy women swimmers - they sounded great. Or even bring out a Divas don't Knit, knitting book!

. Marching Powder
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Rusty Young
July 02, 2004
I read this book on holiday last year in the Caribbean where even there the mad sub-city of San Pedro jail surrounded by the shabby residences of La Paz seemed another planet. Re-reading this book now is just as fresh and recommended to even those with no taste for such things. Briefly, marching Powder is the story of a British drug trafficker who was arrested in Bolivia and jailed in San Pedro prison. During his six-year stretch, McFadden served as a tour guide in a prison that thrived under a capitalist system made possible by bribery of officials.
This book belongs in the top ranks of prison books along with Papillon, A Life Inside: A Prisoner's Notebook, Welcome to Hell: Letters and Writings from Death Row, Escape, and In the Belly of the Beast.

. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
City Travel Guides > Books > Paperback Deals
by: Malcolm Gladwell
February 23, 2006
Sometimes decisions need to be made quickly. All of our knowledge, education, experience, reasoning, intuition, common sense and confidence must come together rapidly.
Malcolm Gladwell calls quick decision making thin slicing in his book: Blink. Thin slicing is the ability to focus on a small set of critical variables to make a quick decision rather than consciously considering every possible variable.
Many decisions are time dependent. Weighing the amount of information needed before making a decision, against the time available is a challenge.
Examples of when thin slicing is needed: combat, avoiding a car accident, or anything requiring an immediate decision. Another common name for thin slicing is thinking on your feet. ... Read More:
