This claims to be the follow up book to 'Italian in 3 months' by the same author and published by Hugo. I have diligently read and studied this previous book, with the help of the cassettes and also done a beginners course at night class. Having got half way through the first chapter of 'Advanced Italian' I have found that many of the words used in the passages I have not encountered before. True, there is a list of some of the new words given, but less than half of the ones new to me (and presumably someone who has done the previous book), and the lists include words which were in the previous book. The choice of passages is dubious, for example a description of architecture in Vicenza which uses arty farty language , never likely ... Read More:

This book covers many aspects of learning Italian and can be used by even those with no knowledge of learning any foreign language. It is clear and shows the student not only formal Italian but some every day usage also. There are also relevant sections on Italian culture and life. The cassette ensures that students can hear Italian being spoken so the oral/aural skills are as good as the written.
The final appendices, including a verb table and dictionary section, are very useful.
Overall a comprehensive guide to studying and learning Italian.

The book is really useful for those essential phrases like 'please' and 'how much...?', and everything is put into handy little subjects. There is also a food section for when you go to restaurants and the numerous cafes. An excellent book for short holidays, with phrases in Italian and English and a small part at the front teaches you how to pronounce the words. 5 stars!
