. Italian Grammar (Teach Yourself)

I am shocked to find myself the first reviewer of this little gem of a book! I first bought this book over a year ago when I began studying Italian and it was by far the least-scary book on Italian grammar at that time. What makes me give it five stars is that I still find it useful today, as an intermediate-advanced student. For such a great price, it has served me a long time. The book is an absolute must for any student of Italian daunted by grammar. You will simply not find a simpler introduction that cuts past all the scary language and teaches you what you really need to know. From basics like 'articles' and 'pronouns' right up to the tricky stuff like "combined pronouns" and "the subjunctive", this book simplifies it all. I ... Read More:

. In Italiano: Student's Book - Level 1

I teach French (Improvers) and Italian (beginners) to people of my own age in the University of the Third Age. The modern idea that grammar can be learned entirely in context, and wholly without structure has been taken too far in popular language books and audio-visual aids produced for people learning at home and in weekly further education classes. In Italiano is the only course which I have so far encountered which achieves a happy balance between those awful Latin primers inflicted on an older generation of schoolchildren, and, for example, BBC courses which get students no further than asking the way, the time, or where the nearest bank is. Another reviewer has described it as a "bible" for learners of Italian. I completely agree.

. Italian in Three Months (Hugo)

I studied Italian about 5 years ago, and then forgot a lot of what I learnt. Travelling to Italy this May I was keen to learn the language again quickly. This course (which I am also doing with the associated tapes) is good, but hard work. You really do need to spend one hour every day (including weekends) to stay on top of the language and complete the course in three months. But it's very satisfying to know that you're making good progress. Don't expect to be fluent at the end - practice makes perfect, so go on holiday to strengthen what you've learnt. After you've finished the course, you'll need it!

. Italian (Linguaphone PDQ)

by: M. Buckby
1999-11
Ultimate Italian is a very comprehensive course that is contoured for the serious learner. Each of the 40 lessons has a specific goal in mind, which makes learning both fun and intuitive. This course is not for just anyone, however. If you're looking to just learn some common Italian phrases, this course is not for you. Ultimate Italian (Beginner/Intermediate) will teach you how to speak Italian the way Italians speak Italian. Native speakers on the tapes give proper, articulate pronunciation which is critical to learning any foreign language properly. It's also a great deal for what you get!

. Berlitz Rush Hour Italian
City Travel Guides > Books > Phrase Books
from: Berlitz Publishing

This is a fun way to learn some basic vocabulary and phrases in Italian. Each section has a song sung in both english and Italian and they are quite catchy. You might find yourself singing out a line from a song in order to remember phrases. However some sections can be quite cheesy but nevertheless I have learned some valuable phrases that have helped me get by in speaking Italian. Definately worth the money if you are looking for something that teaches basic words and phrases and is overall fun. easy to listen to in the car and comes with a book to follow the songs etc with a small grammer and vocabulary section at the back.

. Taking Italian Further (Hugo)

This claims to be the follow up book to 'Italian in 3 months' by the same author and published by Hugo. I have diligently read and studied this previous book, with the help of the cassettes and also done a beginners course at night class. Having got half way through the first chapter of 'Advanced Italian' I have found that many of the words used in the passages I have not encountered before. True, there is a list of some of the new words given, but less than half of the ones new to me (and presumably someone who has done the previous book), and the lists include words which were in the previous book. The choice of passages is dubious, for example a description of architecture in Vicenza which uses arty farty language , never likely ... Read More:
