.Italianissimo: Beginners - CD Pack City Travel Guides > Books > Phrase Books by: Denise De Rome October 29, 1992 I found that the CD's game me an excellent advantage in combination with the book. I founded it very beneficial to read through an exercise and try firstly to understand what was being said in a conversation. Than I used the CD's to see if I could also understand what was being said without the aid of the book. This helps develop the learning curve of Italian at a more rapid pace. After each exercise there are other small excursuses added on the CD to test how well you covered the chapter. I speak Italian fluently, and even then found the layout confusing. The CD is not divided into the various sub-sections so one cannot FF or RW except between chapters and one therefore wastes much time waiting for the right sub-section to be played. For idiom and vocab it's excellent value for money but does n't compare as well with say "ultimate italian". The recorded texts are tricky and could do with parallel translation or at least more comprehensive text notes. The phonetic spelling assists greatly when ordering at a non-english speaking restaurant for instance. We also had our hotel staff in stitches laughing at some of the 'slang' or more real world phrases we used that are listed in the book, that rarely appear in phrase books. Could be particularly useful for women travelling alone in Italy where 'get lost' and 'drop dead' may come in handy..
