. Analysing Architecture
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference
by: Simon Unwin
September 25, 2003
I found this book rather unsatisfying. Like so many instructional works in design, the duality of tacit and explicit knowledge was not bridged and again like so many works of this sort it relies upon a rehearsal of historical and contemporary precedents and exemplars to illustrate formal spatial, geometric and structural concepts. Talking about design is not the same as doing it and I did not feel the book helped one to set about tackling a design problem. The many hand drawn illustrations are engaging - the better ones are those that have not been traced or rendered over from photographs.

. Tunnels, Towers and Temples: London's 100 Strangest Places
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference
by: David Long
April 19, 2007
Sequels aren't meant to be as good as the original, are they, but having enjoyed David Long's SPECTACULAR VERNACULAR last year I had to have this one, and I'm not disappointed. Far from it. In fact for anyone bored with all those London books which just go over the same old ground again (Tower of London, yawn) these two books have been a revelation to me. Packed full of places and buildings most of us don't even notice, and with every one photographed and explored by an author with a real talent for the subject, they're original, funny, and above all fascinating in terms of the detail, the history and the personalities they describe and which together make London what it is today.

. Secret Gratitude Book
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference
by: Rhonda Byrne

As other reviewers have said the book is a journal, which is another name for a 'posh' notebook. Yes you could go out and buy a notebook from 'Woolies'. The whole idea of the law of attraction is to bring abundance into all areas of your life, so do you want to write your dreams and desires into a lovely journal or a cheapie notebook, the choice is yours! I have been using the law of attraction to create what I want in my life long before the secret was out! The law of attraction has been around since time began, it certainly does work, but you have to get into the feeling of being abundant and grateful, a cheapie notebook would not do that for me. Its the difference between wanting a Porsche or a Panda!

. The Rough Guide to India (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference

Despite the inferior quality of the photo reproduction I've always thought that Rough Guide is better value than Lonely Planet. It is generally more informative, more erudite, and the style is arguably geared to a wider readership, while LP leans more towards backpackers and gap-year students. I also think LP is more prone to hyperbole while Rough Guide is normally unflinchingly honest about places. It's perceived negativity is for me a bonus as it is often better to travel with lower or at least realistic expectations. As it says in the opening gambit, many travellers head for India expecting to 'encounter a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to find one of the most materialistic societies on the planet'. I think this is pretty spot-on. There ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Babies
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference
by: Miranda Levy
May 25, 2006
I thought this was a good book - VERY easy to read and worked it's way through the chapters well. It certainly helped set the foundations for the early days of parenthood, although I don't feel it's the kind of book that I'll have lying around to use as a reference tool once the bundle of joy arrives. It has definitely made me feel a lot calmer about the whole thing and I'd recommend it to anybody as an excellent starting point.
