.Virago Woman's Travel Guide to Rome (Virago Woman's Travel Guides) City Travel Guides > Books > Rome by: Ros Belford March 11, 1993 I bought this years ago and it is one of the most fascinating travel books I have ever read. Everything in it is about woman and the best bit is the history of the women of Rome, who rarely feature in school and university books but are far more fun to read about. Can't recommend it highly enough. [...] Why do publishers always scrap the best books?? OK, not always, but in this case they did. My only complaint is that it is aimed mainly at lesbians, which is ridiculous as it is of interest to all women, not only lesbians, and that can be a bit offputting to heterosexual woman. It also has an excellent section on the Sistene Chapel ceiling and wall frescoes, very useful when your are craning your neck whilst being jostled by a thousand other sight see-ers. Unfortunately it is rather light on actual historical information and explanation of what you are seeing and overall feels rather superficial; this is a criticism I feel is in common with this series in general- certainly if you know an area well you are often surprised at the omissions in these books, hence I am always suspicious that I may be ...
