Like most people, I had a vague idea of the ancient world, mostly gleaned from 'I, Claudius' reruns -- so when I decided on a trip to Italy, Greece and Turkey, I packed this book! It was the ideal introduction to the Romans, with juicy snippets from Juvenal, Pausanias, Seneca (the fact is, going back to the original Penguin translations of the ancient authors is very hard work -- and most guide books are either wrong or just plain dull. Luckily, Tony P has done all the work for us, picking out the juiciest and funniest parts -- who knew Lucian, for example, was so entertaining?). It was wonderful reading about Tiberius' sexual antics while on Capri, and poring over Plutarch's complaints about guides while actually on the spot, in Delphi. ... Read More:
