It does not have photos, the plans are small and it is quite dense. However, its virtues far outweigh any deficiencies. It fits snugly into one's pocket and has a wealth of interesting and useful information. The city is divided into areas, each of which can be covered in a day and contains the main tourist attractions. Places not to miss, to eat, to shop, to stay and comprehensive street and public transport maps certainly help to get the most from any short break. It was the ideal introduction to the Romans, with juicy snippets from Juvenal, Pausanias, Seneca (the fact is, going back to the original Penguin translations of the ancient authors is very hard work -- and most guide books are either wrong or just plain dull. Luckily, Tony P has done all the work for us, picking out the juiciest and funniest parts -- who knew Lucian, for example, was so entertaining?). It was wonderful reading about Tiberius' sexual antics while on Capri, and poring over Plutarch's complaints about guides while actually on the spot, in Delphi. ...
