This Essential guide is ideal for a weekend/short break to Rome, highlighting the must-sees. The maps are good, with zoom-ins on the parts of the city where you are most likely to be on foot.

The downside was the low level of practical information, for example on using Rome's bus services (buy ticket before boarding), and trains. Jane Shaw recommended Sperlonga as a great seaside day out easily reachable from Rome. It turned out to be a 120K train ride, followed by a bus trip, followed by the discovery that there is nothing in Sperlonga except the beach, and that there was not necessarily a means of returning to Rome.

Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

As a lover and long-time inhabitant of Rome, I grabbed at this book when I found it on the remainder table of a major bookstore. The "then" part of the book--antique photographs, many of which date to the 19th century--constitutes a marvelous record of Rome's not-too-distant past. The "now' part of the book, however, leaves much to be desired. First, many of the color-photos are washed-out, apparently over-exposed. Buildings are white, skies are even whiter, and much detail of Rome's magnificent architecture has been lost. Next, many of the modern photos have been taken with a wider angle of lens, and from a different perspective than the original photos. Having just returned from a three day trip to Rome with my two chidren (aged 5 & 9)I can recommend this book with only a few smallreservations.

This has to be one of the most inspirational guidebooks I have read. Most are full of facts about the history of the place you are visiting or the people that lived there. This book only tells you the things you really want to know. My children loved being told the story about the girl who married a man who built a fountain for her only to move back home and cement up her windows when he turned out to be a gambler and crouching on the floor of the Panthenon to see the perspective change as the floor slopes away to the edges.
