. Rome (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rome
by: Reid Bramblett, Jeffrey Kennedy
February 05, 2004
As usual an excellent publication Eyewitness.Very comprehensive coverage by area in alphabetical order. Maps clear an concise especially with the enlarged section which is useful for walking about especially as it has a fold over book mark. Found the two part maps of the Forum East/west difficult to use as you tend to visit it in one go. When you use the Palatine map unless you enter by there suggested entrance it is quite hard to relocate I would definately buy one but i linked mine with an OXford Archaeological Guide by Amanda Claridge. Ate at some of the retaurants in the guide they were reliable, checked off some of the hotels it suggested but contacted hotels own websites for better deals.

. Roman France: An Archaeological Field Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Rome
by: Jeremy K. Knight
June 29, 2001
I agree with the previous review. Knight's guide is a useful initial guide but too full of omissions to be comprehensive. Important sites such as the largely intact baths at Entrammes in Touraine are omitted. Smaller constructions such as tower tombs are sporadically mentioned. The quality and detail of accounts for sites varies enormously. The book reflects Mr. Knight's own interests and knowledge (as can be seen in 'the End of Antiquity' (1999)) and the inclusion of Merovingian sites, while interesting, makes the structure rather bitty. It is a pity, as such a book is sorely needed for Gaul. Given the rapid developments in museums, excavations a web-site would be the most sensible medium to carry this information.
