This is pretty much everything a guide book should be; plenty of detail on the mainstream stuff (where to stay and eat in Nairobi, how to organise a safari in the Maasai Mara), but plenty also on the areas off the beaten track. Best of all, the book is unfailingly relevant, avoiding the usual pages of filler on the blindingly obvious. The wealth of background information and the dry, witty style are welcome bonuses. The best recomendation I can give this book is that it quite simply made our holiday much more enjoyable than it would have been.

I would highly recommend this book when about to plan a round the world trip or indeed any kind of solo travel where you will need to plan your own routes and accomodation.

It is inspiring and colourful with vibrant pictures giving you ideas about where you may like to go, and detailed tips and information about all aspects of your trip. It covers what to take, how much to take, who to travel with and even deals with coming home again.

It is written in a way that appeals to both young students/graduates/young people who are about to embark upon an adventure but it is not soley for this group. This is THE WORST guide book in the world. Local people of Sicily seem to be the best guides for me. I spent a week in Sicily and every place I visited I would refer to this book. But all these pompous authors wrote were sarcastic and frankly insulting to Sicily. This guide completely avoids how beautiful the Aoelian Islands are, where each island is different and diverse and some with living volcanoes. The only benefit I got from this book was when I was quoting it with locals I met on my travels and at laugh how bad this book really is. Seriously, you can travel to Sicily armed with just a map and phrase book. I wished I did because this rough guide was heavy!

As a seasoned traveller, having an accurate and useful travel guide is an essential part of my kit. Recently I have grown tired of mainstream and established guides leaning more towards database listings of where to go and what to do. I want insight. I want to know about a place, its history, culture and the author's personal views. I want to feel inspired to visit a place by the writing. So it's refreshing to see that the Rough Guides still manage to maintain an acceptable balance between information and insight.

The Rough Guide to Slovenia is now in its second edition and there have been many improvements. The most obvious is the new glossy cover; a full page photo with a translucent band across help to make the book much more aesthetically ... Read More:
