This book was invaluable during my travel around the islands. I thoroughly recommend it. The advice on hostels and hotels was spot on and became my bible for deciding where to visit and what to do. I also heard from others I met travelling that they rate it over other similar guide books as they are more `frank' about their advice on the standards of places to stay.

I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least.

This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! I was very surprised to see that several of the most negative comments about this edition of the Rough Guide to Mallorca were written before the book was published! Remarkable

Although I travelled just before a new edition of this book was published, I thought this book was excellent in helping me plan my holiday in advance. We knew we wanted to go to Thailand but weren't quite sure where - this book helped us decide based on not only things to see & do but weather condtions etc, which I found were excellent compared to many internet sites and travel brochures (which portray Thailand as one climate area, when in fact it has many different weather systems). The book was excellent and still felt 'up to date'; for example it helped us find the most fab little boutique hotel "Buddy Lodge" in Bankok which was exactly what we were looking for and never would have found otherwise. I don't know what I expected but certainly nothing this detailed or so well-written. It was fun to read, and completely educational. I don't have children of my own but as a travel writer I need to know what women travelers and mothers can expect. I wouldn't hesitate a single second to offer this book as a gift to parents, or to recommend it without reservation to anyone considering travel with young children. Not only is it practical, it's fun. I learned plenty about attitudes towards children around the world. Well done!

Essential wide-ranging comprehensive eye-popping information packed guide

Put it like this - if you're going anywhere covered in this book then you probably won't need any other book.

This map is an absolute must for anyone going to Marrakech. I recently went and not only would have been totally lost without it, but would have missed out on some of the treasures Marrakech has to offer. Street names are a rarity but this map makes up for the lack of them by being absolutely perfect - even through the maze of the souqs! Without it i may have had to resort to pay a few dirham to be guided by locals who either take you on a roundabout route to where you want to be, normally via their cousins tannery, or send you in completely the wrong direction and laugh at you as you go. Buy it before you leave or suffer the consequences!

On a two week holiday to Japan, bought this and another major guide at the airport, hot off the press. Many aspects are disappointing, for example, the guide is organised by theme, and not by area. I'm staying in Shinjuku, if i want to look up accommodation, that's on page 117, but if you want a map, that's 40 pages away o p150, and somewhere to go out, try page 180, and the sights? flip back 30 pages or so... I think you get the idea. Does it have a handy index? No. A cross reference? No. The maps, which I thought were okay when I flicked through it at the airport, aren't that detailed.
