. The Ghost That Haunted Itself: The Story of the McKenzie Poltergeist

Amazon recommended this book to me along with This House is Haunted, the recently re-released story of the famous Enfield plotergeist. After reading other reviews here, it sounded like a good idea. However, I quickly regretted spending the extra money after I started reading it. "Just the facts, ma'am" seems to be a boring idea to the author, who works hard to "bring the story to life" with much irrelevant and poorly-written prose. At times it becomes a challenge to ferret out the actual facts of the case. Much hype surrounds the happenings in the cemetery, along with an endless stream of thrill-seekers hoping, it seems, to be the next ones to feel sick, pass out, and end up with cuts and bruises (about as much fun as getting into a drunken ... What a lot of self-indulgent nonsense. The author seems to be a competent doctor, but, as a worldly-wise person, he`s not in the race. Why he did not get out of Uganda as soon as he found what was going on or suspected what was going to happen I cannot understand. He knew he was dealing with a megalomaniac psychopath, but stayed on as that lunatic`s physician. His later misfortunes were of his own making and certainly don`t arouse any sympathy from me. That said, the accounts of the dictator`s rants and mood swings and the general state of affairs prevailing in the country are the most first-hand reports we are likely to get from a European resident. That the UK Government requested Dr. Garrigan to poison Amin is an interesting claim that is ... Read More:

. School Leadership (Policy and Practice in Education)

I've enjoyed this book immensely since I found it in a little shop in Gairloch. Its compelling title drew me in and as soon as I saw Scotland's geology was being discussed with that of the Moon and Mars, I knew Rider was on the right track. At times, Rider leans a bit heavily on the terms and expressions he knows so well from his geology background and gentler guidance for the reader would help get some of the finer points of geology across. I also could have done without the rants about wind farms. They seemed so out of place in such a good book. Nevertheless, Rider ably mixes fine storytelling of a human dimension with the awe of Earth's history and context in the Solar System.
Well done, Malcolm Rider. Your book is a gem.
