...up there with Sunset Song, in my humble opinion (and I should say that the latter, read when I was 14, was the novel for me which made fiction seemt he greatest thing in the world). Far better than Lanark - tighter, more humane, funnier and more serious. A wonder.

The rural setting with a community forced to face up to a potential supermarket development, newcomers to the community and teenagers growing up in a claustrophic environment could have all added a strong atmosphere and depth to the plot. It didn't because the characters are stereotypical with no new dimension to them.
The plot is good, with twists and red herrings that prevents you from easily identifiying the murderer.
In the third of this series - "Lying Dead" - I felt stronger development of the main characters was needed. In this novel, Tam McNee's character is drawn out and this is done well with flaws in his character (ie. jealousy of one of the team) that gives him human characteristics. This is an interesting read as it covers the life of a self confessed junkie without the slightest attempt to glamourise or excuse.

The style is a little basic but, hey, this is an autobiography by someone who has spent too much time on "the wild side of life" & literary style was not high on the agenda.

Salutory lessons abound within this book & none more so than the fact that the sooner society faces up to the real problem of addiction in whatever form the better but yet there is hope as well.

Inspiring if only from the aspect of what have we done with our lives from a more privileged position?
