I would have liked to give this beautiful book 5 stars as the quality of the art was exactly as I would have expected of Jack Vettriano, it looses a star because of the layout of the gallery section of the book where a number of the paintings are layed out across the centre crease. I would rather have a smaller reproduction on one side of paper than a larger reproduction part of whose detail is lost in the book's crease.

But don't let my critism put you off this book, there are a lot of painting reproduced on a single side and therefore have not spoilt by the book's formatting.

For anyone new to Scotland who is intending to do some travelling around this is a cracking book. It covers just about any area of information needed from fauna & flora to transport options, general medical advice and detailed walking plans complete with maps. Even if you are not intending to do the walks it is still worth having just for the general information provided. Walking however, as the title implies, makes up the main part of the book and is very well done. Each walk is dissected, starting with a historical overview of the area and leading to information about what maps to take, the nearest towns, what to pack and a detailed description of the route. This is the book that anyone interested in Fair Isle knitting dreams of. The explanations on technique are very good, with very useful ideas. The section on colour is excellent. The only slight criticism, and it is only slight the instructions given for the garment patterns are slighty vague at times, and in one case a bit misleading, but with a modicum of commonsense can be worked out

Quentin Jardines Skinner stories captivate you; the storyline "weaves into a tapestry" as Skinner says about the seemingly different cases to a colleague, It all comes together at the end from the new Pope visiting Edinburgh to the death of two drummers. It is a book that you will read and say to your significant other "will just read to the end of the chapter" - never happens, you will want to read on. I bought this on Amazon recomendation and wish I hadn't as it's poorly written, repetitive, full of superfluous material and just plain dull.
The actual information on the hauntings could be condensed to forty pages, hence the padding to make up this slim book.
Save your money.
