For anyone new to Scotland who is intending to do some travelling around this is a cracking book. It covers just about any area of information needed from fauna & flora to transport options, general medical advice and detailed walking plans complete with maps. Even if you are not intending to do the walks it is still worth having just for the general information provided. Walking however, as the title implies, makes up the main part of the book and is very well done. Each walk is dissected, starting with a historical overview of the area and leading to information about what maps to take, the nearest towns, what to pack and a detailed description of the route. I wanted a munro map that I could stare at in my home study and dream of mountains rather than what ever the more pressing task. Unfortunately the sheer size of this map means that it is way too big to fit into a normal-sized study which is already full of book shelves, monitors etc. It is also not laminated which means it does not sit nicely on the wall. I was less bothered about all the extra information that is on the map also. So all in all it may suit some but not me.

As sole author of the first edition and co-author of the current one, I start by declaring my interest. But Amazon visitors may be puzzled by the wide variation in reviewers' ratings, and I'd like to explain. Back in 2001, Britain was gripped by Foot & Mouth disease; our first ed lacked trail detail in places simply because the countryside was closed! Two editions and four years later, having enlisted help from a co-author who lives in the Great Glen and walks it daily, it was possible to create a much better guidebook. I believe this book fully justifies its five stars, but I don't claim any objectivity, and respect the opinions of independent reviewers. Just read the author's comment on the 10th anniversary of Damn' Rebel Bitches and wanted to say how right she is to feel so proud of it. I bought and read it after hearing writer Janet Paisley sing its praises a couple of years ago. There are countless books about the Jacobite era but this is the first to tell the stories of the many women who played such significant roles during those years and it is a fascinating read. It is clear how much research has gone into the book but it remains always accessible and a 'damn' good read'. Maggie Craig has shown Jacobite women of the 18th century in an entirely new and inspiring perspective. The best part of the vacation was three days spent on Islay, which is a gorgeous island with great whisky and a rich history. I've never been a big fan of travel books, but luckily stumbled on Jefford's study of Islay and read it cover to cover. Jefford is a terrific writer and researcher, weaving the geology, history and culture of the island in the warp of beautifully-sourced studies of each of the island's distilleries. It's simply a terrific book that anyone traveling to Islay (or wishing to) should read before their trip. Oh, and Islay is a fantastic place to visit.
