. North to the Cape (Cicerone Guide)

Review from my blog at http://northtothecape.tumblr.com
This book has been invaluable in helping me sketch out the route I'll take. Like Wainwright's Coast to Coast path, there is no official route for the Cape Wrath Trail, indeed that's one of the attractions. The authors simply share a journey they took that avoids long strecthes of road and offer some possible variations.
They break the trip down into 21 stages, none longer than 15 miles. Most stages finish at places where overnight accomodation is in theory available. In summer, many of the stages will be too short for the more ambitious walker, but the authors seem to have struck a reasonable balance.
The prose is well written, if a little old fashioned ... Read More:

. Highlander Untamed

by: Monica McCarty

I have just finished reading Monica McCarty's debut novel: Highlander Untamed, but I sure will read the other 2 books of the trilogy!
The story is gripping and keeps you interested, her characters seem real, not just some shallowly painted 2D, made up characters, but actual persons. Monica McCarty has put great effort into giving them depth and substance, and she has succeeded! Her characters won't leave you indifferent, either you will love them fiercely (Isabel is such a loveable and sweet charcter, but she still has a backbone, Rory the hero is wonderfully handsome and oh so noble) or you will shrink from them from disgust (as from the MacDonald of Sleat or the Mackenzies). And another thing I found refreshing about her novel wasthat ... Read More:

. It is What It Is: The Autobiography
Search: Scotland
by: David Coulthard

It Is What It Is: The Autobiography
My normal read is romantic fiction but, being a David Coulthard fan, I thought it was probably about time I knew a little more about him. I fully expected to maybe read the first chapter of his autobiography then lose interest. However, what a wonderful book and insight into the man. It kept me enthralled throughout. Well written, it showed us the person himself - what an autobiography should be - and not much of the technical side of F1 or cars. Perhaps other people writing autobiographies should take a leaf or two out of this book to make them more interesting.

. Scrambles in Lochaber (Cicerone Guide)
Search: Scotland
by: Noel Williams
January 31, 2000
I've been using this book since 1996, and no other book has contributed more to my fun on Scottish mountains. It covers all mountains within 45km of Fort William, so not just Ben Nevis and Glen Coe but also Cruachan, the Saddle, Ben Alder etc etc. While there are classics like Aonach Eagach and Ledge Route, there are also many excellent scrambles that seem to have been undiscovered before this book.
The route descriptions are clear, and the book uses the standard grading system grade 1 to grade 3(S). The photos are okay, but I guess will be much more glamorous and numerous in more recent editions than my 1996 one.
The Giants Staircase in the Grey Corries is one superb scramble (grade 2).

. Pennine Way Companion: A Pictorial Guide (Wainwright Pictorial Guides)
Search: Scotland
by: A. Wainwright
May 01, 2004
This special edition boxed set of seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland must rank amongst the finest and detailed set of guide books for walkers and lovers of the Lake District, situated in Cumbria, England. The meticulous detail and minute accuracy, together with the drawings, sketches and notes make these guide books unique. Guides to the Lakeland have appeared since 1770, so these guides are therefore not original, but they are distinctive in concentrating on individual fells, over 200 of them, and are not walking tour guides. Book 1 initially starts with fells over 1400 feet, but in later books fells of over 1000 feet are included, but there is one fell included of 985 feet which is noted as a 'protuberance' rather than as a fell.
