Mairi Hedderwick is a firm family favourite a pithy and witty writer who is equally talented as an illustrator. Her Hebridean children's books give an endearing snapshot into the life on a small island community through the eyes of accidental-mischief-maker Katie Morag.

I'm particularly fond of Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers - the tensions between the two grannies will ring very true in a lot of families (not mine of course, Mum - honest!) and there are some lovely touches which will go over the children's heads and entertain the grown-up reading aloud, which is always good if you have to keep re-reading the books. The illustrations are also rich with incidental detail which help keep the attention of the child.

As a Scot, living in Scotland, this is the one guide book that I refer to again and again. When holidaying in Scotland, we plan whole days around this book. We'll plan a scenic route to see a waterfall or a good walk with the dog. We'll work out what eaterie we're going to have lunch in, and invariably, we'll be staying in a hotel, B&B or guest house recommended by this guide and have a pint in one of its suggested pubs.

The thing I like most about this guide is that it's not neccessarily "Scotland The Most Expensive". It has everything from "Best Fish and Chip Shops" through to top michelin starred restaurants. All this via "Best Waterfalls", "Best Woodland Walks", "Best Scenic Drives" etc. etc.

I used this for my recent trip to Scotland. I only visited Highlands so I can comment only about the part of book that covers Highlands.
The book doesn't really cover anything in much details and doesn't provide any useful information that you can't find on any free websites on internet.

I was hoping this guide will cover much of the interesting things that can be done in Scotland but it only covered the things that you can check with anyone who has briefly visited Highlands.

This is a really good read, Paddy Crerand`s life story is full of top quality football matches, trips abroad and punch ups! You can take the boy out of the Gorbals but, well, you know the rest. Paddy also cuts through a lot of the pc bull in some other books by describing in detail the injustice he faced on his visits back to Ireland, his real home. In fact he sums up the political problems faced by Catholics in a way not normally seen in a footballer`s book. The B Specials may be a mystery to the vast majority of readers but any Irish person resding the book will be only too aware of their malign presence. Crerand played for two massive clubs, Celtic and United. He won League championship, FA Cup and European Cup medals. And he put George Best ... Read More:

OK it is amusing and irreverent in style but its not the hillarious guide to the UK I was expecting - ie. not a guide to good, off-the-beaten-track places to go in the UK. Quite surreal - def a boy's book of odd facts and eccentricities.
