What could have been a very good book is reduced to a good one by some very poor editing.
There are leads not followed up (why was Armand Hammer being scrutinised by MI5?); characters suddenly appear in the narrative having been introduced once 30 pages ago; there is occasional Boy's Own detail (do we really need to know the complete Mark and variant of the radar equipment on board rescue helicopters?) there is an over-reliance on acronyms.
The book would have also benefitted greatly from a few plans of Piper Alpha showing the arrangement of some of the locations where the narrative is placed. I used this for my recent trip to Scotland. I only visited Highlands so I can comment only about the part of book that covers Highlands.
The book doesn't really cover anything in much details and doesn't provide any useful information that you can't find on any free websites on internet.

I was hoping this guide will cover much of the interesting things that can be done in Scotland but it only covered the things that you can check with anyone who has briefly visited Highlands.

Colin has captured the genuine feel of what may have been a physically run-down area but what the people turned into a tightly-knit community. To anyone growing up in 1950's or early 1960's Glasgow the Gorbals was an area to be avoided. These infamous slums however had a heart - the people of The Gorbals. Colin gives voice to how people had a strong community spirit that survived the 1960's redevelopment of the area and why even today people will be proud to say "Ah'm fae the Gorbals". I understand he is producing a follow-up to come out in late 2008 recounting his own change from a Gorbals Boy to a cosmopolitan man. Quintin Jardine writes a number of serial style books about recurring characters. One of his recurring characters is Bob Skinner, the Deputy Chief Constable for the Edinburgh area of Scotland. By all accounts he's typical of most detectives these days. He bends rules when he needs to, and breaks them when he has no other alternative, but unlike most rule breaking cops, is liked by those he works with (and so has few of the flaws that are typically associated with the flawed detective).

The problem with this book is that Skinner doesn't appear in much of the book. Imagine having a Rankin book with a marginalised Rebus or a Christie crime novel with a marginalised Poirot or Marple and you've got an idea of what to expect here.

Pardon me, but I found this title to be inapt for the book. The victim, John Heppel, is a bad writer, acts in inconsiderate ways, displays immense egotism, and is generally despicable. But I didn't find him boring . . . just obnoxious. The book, too, is anything but boring.

What distinguishes this book from the run-of-the-mill mystery is the marvelous satirical humor displayed throughout. Hamish Macbeth avoids promotion. His superiors prove to be incompetent, unhappy, and in some cases driven to drink in this book. You can quickly see why he would be skeptical of becoming more like these people. John Heppel wins prizes for his books, has a great story about his gritty beginnings and attracts the interest of those don't know writing. In ... Read More:

this play has a whole lot of hidden meaning and irony. more so of dramatic irony actually-where to us as the readers it is obvious but the characters are oblivious. we watch the slow deterioration of macbeth through the course of the play- his wife on the other hand goes through a sudden change and is giving up on life while macbeth holds a strong firm grip on his power and will not give up till the very end.
one of the more significant quotes in the play:"Stars hide your fires, Let not light see my dark, deep desires". it deeply demonstrates macbeth's darkness which he had of present acquired; esp. so after the meeting of the witches. we see that he too, like the witches speaks in equivocatory language- he has become one of them.
