First off I ask you to disregard my rating of this volume - I have only read "Weatherhouse", and is not in a position to rate the others. However, since I must rate the item to be able to post here I set it to four, which is my rating of the "Weatherhouse".

On to business: I'm not trying to be difficult or in any way belittle Nan Shepherd, but I could not let this one slide: Nan Shepherd is NOT the author "A Scots Quair", despite what the synopsis in the product description section is saying. Lewis Grassic Gibbon is the author of "A Scots Quair". I don't know who wrote the synopsis, but this person should check his or her facts better next time.

This is what I have been waiting for a long time. Hostile Habitats has everything there is to know about the Scottish hills. All sections are explained in a way that normal mortals can understand it. There are sections about geology, plants, mammals, birds and human traces. The most important living things are explained individually. Very well laid out. Most of the wildlife parts can be also used for hills in Wales and England.

This map is a 1:25,000 scale - perfect for walking, hiking and short cycling trips.

The Landranger maps may look better, but are 1:50,000. 1:50,000 is pathetic for hikers unless very experienced in their use - imagine ur road atlas being half the size and trying to read the road names.

This is the map to go for. Being OS, it's fantastic, and even has the ski centre and all its ski lifts marked out!

I have just finished reading this wonderful book. I was taken through, tears, smiles, warmth,human kindness and rejoicing that only comes from the the soul of human struggling and hardship. The heartless father and typical British glass system gets a beating by the pluckiness of this hardy Glaswegian boy who's strength is fueled by his mothers love. I must admit to having tears in my eyes several times. This is a book that will remain in my book case as a reminder.
