It's a great idea to collect the best ridges in Scotland into one book and it turns out there isn't space for them all in this one book - the appendix lists another 40 odd (mainly climbs). The book is written with a marvelous energy and joie de vivre that really draws you in; the maps are great and the photos too. It's a lovely book. I am a walker, not a climber, and, despite the subtitle, there are many routes in here suitable for reasonably experienced hillwalkers with a good head for heights. Do the winter routes as summer walks and Creise, Ring of Steall, Aonach Eagach, Liathach and many others become accessible to us mortals. Some additional route planning to cut out short climbing sections also opens up a number of the other routes given. ... Read More:

Waste of money. Self-indulgent, parochial, political. Rather buy something on whisky by Jim Murray or the late Michael Jackson. Any book on Scotland by anybody on earth, even if he is from Tierra del Fuego,would be better. And as for the author's friends, his youth, cars and his naive and fashionable politics- who cares and why does he think anybody else would?

Basically and updated version of the last edition but an all round improvement on the content of the book. Brillian read, especially if you cant get to sleep at night! The author has done a good job of modernising this edition from the previous and it is even funny in places. A must have for all property law buffs!

If your going to visit Edinburgh don't even think about doing it without this guide, you'd miss so much - I actually used to live in Edinburgh for a while and I didn't know a quarter of this.

Instead of listing tons of bars and restaurants, this book picks places and things to do according to your mood. There's a great section on things to do if it's a cold day and things to do on a romantic outing, the best pubs for a quiet chat, etc etc. And the thing I really liked is that it's all written and photographed by locals - beautiful and stylish to look at too... Definite a great buy if your visiting or if you live there.

What could have been a very good book is reduced to a good one by some very poor editing.
There are leads not followed up (why was Armand Hammer being scrutinised by MI5?); characters suddenly appear in the narrative having been introduced once 30 pages ago; there is occasional Boy's Own detail (do we really need to know the complete Mark and variant of the radar equipment on board rescue helicopters?) there is an over-reliance on acronyms.
The book would have also benefitted greatly from a few plans of Piper Alpha showing the arrangement of some of the locations where the narrative is placed. The author makes significance of the confusion occasioned by the darkness, smoke and maze of the platform's layout; his writing occasionally worsens ... Read More:

Thought it might be heavy reading but it is anything but. Well written story of Scottish history. Well worth reading. Could have done with a few more maps but otherwise excellent. Couldn't put it down until i finished.
Scottish history is worth knowing about and until i read the book i had no idea religion was also behind so much going on within the country and it's downfall. Magnus Magnusson has done Scotland proud with this informative book on it's history.

I'm half way through reading Ecstasy, after having read Trainspotting and seeing the film. I've also seen the film Green Street and can't stop seeing the parallels between the story of Green Street and the second story, Fortune's Always Hiding... I've looked around online to see if there's a reason for this but have come up with nothing... Has anybody else noticed this?

At last a book that has helped me overcome my fear of cooking! The recipes are easy to use and look amazing. I highly recommend this book to everyone, as it caters not only for dinner parties but also has some v quick supper and lunch dishes.
