. The Visual Display of Quantitative Information
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Edward R. Tufte
2001-01
I think I made Tufte very rich. If I didn't it was not my fault. I was a Displays Manager with IBM and used his book to illustrate how colour & pixels could enhance information. I developed a presentation that used his work to exploit data and its visualisation. As a result I sold one hell of a lot of screens (IBM 3279 colour screens - the first ever colour screens - and at £3,000 a crack I sold 6,000 in the first year alone). I also sold a lot of Tufte's books. The quite brilliant example of Minard's graph of Napoleon's campaign in Russia (contained within the book) would keep an audience occupied for 2 hours - and not a yawn - so if ever the Good Professor decides to make a Will, he should remember me and I hope ... . Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5 Billion-Year History of the Human Body
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Neil Shubin
January 31, 2008
"Your Inner Fish" truly merits ample praise for being one of the best-written books on science I've read in years. It also ranks easily as an early, leading candidate as one of the finest books published this year. In clear, concise, and quite vivid, prose, this marvelous terse tome recounts in spectacular fashion, the incredible saga of the evolutionary history of our human body. Vertebrate paleobiologist and anatomy professor Neil Shubin is our enthusiastic, expert guide through this amazing journey into our body's primordial past, weaving with utmost brevity, a most compelling, and intricate, tale from fossils, genes and developmental biology. A fascinating trek through these aspects of evolutionary biology that represents too an intriguing personal ... Read More:

. The Back Passage
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: James Lear
April 17, 2008
Yes, it's entertaining and yes it's arousing and thus fulfils its own brief. But ... oh dear Mr Lear, on page TWO you identify the river that flows through Cambridge as the Isis. It isn't. The Isis flows through Oxford. The "old" name of Cambridge's river Cam is the Granta (like the literary magazine). In a confection such as "Back Passage", it's these details (easily checked on Wikipedia, for God's sake), that make the difference between a genre-subverting delight and a ho-hum "well ... it's sort of OK and ... sort of fun ..."
Louis LaSalle's cover photograph is, as usual with Mr LaSalle, drop-dead sexy.

. Prison Diary 3
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Jeffrey Archer
April 01, 2005
Having read the other 2 diaries I was looking forward to the final installment. Archer did not disappoint and what came across to me was the gross injustices in the system. Having never experienced the prison system from the inside it was a fascinating - though depressing, and at times very touching - read.
This Trilogy should be compulsory reading for all Home Secretaries and those involved in policy making in the criminal justice system. It is no wonder that such a high proportion of offenders reoffend, for a variety of reasons. Archer doesn't have all the answers to the ills in the prison system (although he does come up with some suggestions) but without knowing what actually happens 'on the inside' what hope is there for any reform?
