This book is a splendid introduction to theories about visual culture. It opens up the sociological / psychodynamic / anthropological theories that exist about the visual media to laymen. Another good thing is that they do not focus on high culture visual media, but also on film, television, advertising, etc. This is what makes the book valuable to people who are specialized in neighbouring fields and who wish to know more about visual media (for instance, marketeers, perception psychologists, therapists, people studying politics, etc.). I found this insight to Walter Murch and the world of editing truly remarkable. Once I'd started the book I wanted to know more, whether it was about the techniques of editing or how to judge audience reactions of screenings or what is going on in the editing world in terms of what software is out there and available with the advantages and disadvantages clearly listed for you.
Overall, a truly enjoyable read and a useful insight into the mind of an editor.
A must-read for any trainee film editor.

If you are interested about justice, sociology and society you should some day read this excellent story of how control over people has changed within last five hundred years. Perhaps mr Foucault was inspired by Orwell's 1984 and turned it to be scientifically consistent theory or control. Great thing is that you don't need to be scientist to understand about this book which means that it must have been hard work to make the text sound as easily to comprehend.

Really excellent book when trying to understand what role morality should play in law and should people prima facie obey the law. Covers natural law and positivism as well as numerous other theories (marxism etc...)

Very good for guiding you through the tricky issues that jurisprudence or ethics in law has and well worth buying if you are on a law degree course or even if you are studying philosophy.

I bought this book because of the very good reviews. I found it heavy, tedious, boring and superficial - it failed to get underneath the real micro issues that are going on in failing or 'tired' relationships. The information it contains is pretty much the same as was being published 20 years ago, in my experience. The seven steps aren't rocket science and there's certainly no magic ingredient here, if you are expecting one. It does offer a structure for how to work on your relationship, if that's what you need and what you think might help you.

Sorry, but I hated this book, it grated on me from the first page.

The charachters, the dialogue, the story - I just didn't connect with any of it - I found it tiresome, tedious and unbelievable (what's with the charachter names? Strike, The Word, Futon, Thumper, Peanut, Duck, Big Chief, - I found them laughable - they totally detracted from what's supposed to be a serious book).

And the dialogue! who speaks like the characters in this novel? - some of it made me laugh out loud - yet another thing that detracted from the supposed realism.

I found this dictionary really helpful and invaluable tool. There are a few words that are not in the dictionary though such as solution focussed therapy, strengths model and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, for example.

I have used this dictionary for 3 years now and it has been great but would have been better if the more up-to-date terms/words were in it.
