Good Lord what a book it does not happen very often and i often 'force read' a lot of books but this was brilliant & i could not put it down xxx

This seems to me to be one of the more personal of Orwell's books. Supposedly written from life experiences Orwell plunges us into the lives of those who have no homes and whose daily fight for existence on the streets is made more complex by a stifling social order, unsympathetic policemen and a charitable system which demands so much of those that it claims to help that it leaves them with less dignity than they started off with.

Orwell seems to have an affinity with the world of dirt and grime. He writes with gut wrenching realism about the simple details that most authors with a social axe to grind might forget. It is these details which allow you as the reader to become immersed in the horrors of the world he paints.

This book is good. It's well written and humorous. It will be your pal when you're distraught and teach you how to navigate through a difficult time with your head high. I only wish I had it seven years ago- it would have saved me a lot of time & heartache!
It's written like the authors genuinely care and is must have tlc!

i got this book for my early years class. i dont think its good for studys but it will be really usefull if i ever went into working in this area. it gets you to think about putting the consepts of early years into practise with the children you work with so it would also be good for people doing primary school studdys for when they are on placement. i would not recomend this book to students doing academic studys but for people directly working with young children this book will be great.

A wonderful insight in what modern women may be thinking in the bedroom and demistifies their needs somewhat for the average male, looking to be a better lover for his love. a good place to start talking openly and frankly about fantasies and an oppertunity to spark things up again. Unfortunately you have to see past the sad author's view of men and her peudo-intellectual ramblings about weak men and strong women and how men are unable to fantasise about characters like madonna becuase she is 'too strong' in terms of image for men and how men want to put her and others in 'her place'. Sad that she's unable to present a book without subjecting the reader to her own insecurities, and over inflated ego that shields them.

I bought this on a whim after a trip to Egypt that left me confused about what I was seeing at home and abroad in regard to women in Islam. Easy to read and not at all 'dry' the text is written by a journalist who I feel has avoided simply reporting stereotypes (as one reviewer has alleged) while not shying away from any truth in assumptions those ignorant to Islam or the Middle East may have made. She talks to progressive Muslims as well as hard-liners and though perhaps it is clear she supports a more progressive view I think she represents both sides with care.

I found it a fascinating read and certainly something I would recommend in a time when fear and ignorance are prominent in the way people react to a religion they don't necessarily understand.

Never before have I come across a body of text that has provided not only the tools for academic success within the subject, but inspiration for taking my own work to new levels through the intensive research Bordwell & Thompson have gone through. In my own studies 'Film Art' has been an inspiration and the summarisation of other works within it has meant less time needed on reading and more can be concentrated on putting pen to paper. A rare theoretical must-have.

A whole variety of essays put together in this interesting book. Russells clear thinking is as some others have said 'A breath of fresh air'. Never was it more so than in the transcript of the televised arguement of 1948 with Bishop Copeland. I could barely understand what the erudite bishop was talking about but Russell kept his calm and politely put him in his place on several occasions - oh to see this for myself, it sounds hilarious.

Russell was a champion of womens rights during some fairly sexist years. I like many of his thoughts on this matter ie. Girls should not consider having children before the age of 20, people in their 20s should be free to go in and out of relationships without hangups as long as children are not involved, thereby learning what they really want ...
