Healy's autobiography of his troubled childhood, descent into alcoholism, fifteen years living on the streets of London and eventual rehabilitation through chess is a difficult read. That's not because of his style, which is stark and objective, but because his existence was so traumatic: thieving or using con-tricks to get enough money to buy the next bottle of wine or scotch, drinking himself into oblivion every night, nearly getting killed in fights, trusting no-one. It seems barely possible that he could have survived so many scrapes and such a punishing routine, or that there could be any escape, given the severity of his addiction. Saviano's insight on this deadly subject made me wonder a few times about his personal relationship with the people he so openly denounces. This is a 28-year-old courageous man who has decided to put his life on the line to cast some light into the darkes area of Italy's social and political life. When I read the first chapter, I had the distinct feeling that what I had in my hands was a truly ground-breaking book. When I read about the links between organised crime and global trade, and to such a scale as well, I could understand why Italy is in the G8 in spite of his disastrous economy and almost irreversible ideological void. Who thinks that organised crime is a phenomenon contained within the Italian peninsula, must think again. Eye-opening and inspirational.

This is a fantastically well-written insight in to Britain's gangs. Heale has conducted some fascinating (and frankly extremely brave) interviews with those figures at the heart of gang culture. This could have been written simply as a chapter-by-chapter account of these interviews, but Heale's novelistic style makes this a truly gripping, and at times traumatic, read. One Blood could also have sensationalised Britain's gangs, but it provides a very real, intelligent and mature account of gang life and an intriguing analysis of the problems associated with it. Indeed, it is often the casual and arbitrary nature of violence in this chaotic world that will shock the reader most of all.

This book has some useful practical strategies, I read it when I first stopped dieting and didn't know what else to do! I found some of her suggestions very helpful and others much less so. The author seems to have adapted her 'stop smoking' strategies to overeating, which only partly works. It's a little prescriptive and I'm not sure that Gillian Riley has ever been overweight or that she really knows what it's like to struggle with weight loss and overeating. Ms Corby has over a dozen web sites supporting her innocence, and dozens of bloggers from both sides. The pro camp insist that she was set up for the Bali airport bust where over 4kgs of hydroponically grown marijuana was discovered as she landed from Sydney, while the against bloggers grumble that she must have been aware of the contents of her oversize `boogie' surf-board bag. They point to her party-loving family and friends but scarcely prove much. The book is naturally in the pro group building a case only slightly marred by feverish insistence and sentimentality.
Professionally written by a journalist working with Schapelle, No More Tomorrows keeps interest high even if questions remain. The book is among the better of this year's prison-hell books, although ... Read More:

This is a truly remarkable book. And I deeply hope that this thoughtful man becomes the president.

This book, which is not ghosted, was written when he was 33 years old long before he had any thoughts of a political career. In it he explores what is means to have a black Afrcan father that he never knew and a whilte American mother and seemingly to belong no-where. As he grows up he has to discover what it means to be black while being raised by white parents and, while doing so gives the reader a gentle and loving education into the issues of race.

As a white 'middle class' girl these are not issues that I have ever had to consider. It's easy for me to say 'I don't see colour, I only see people' as I have never had to see colour, I have never been reminded ... Read More:
