I am a first year PhD student (pure research and no taught modules or recommended reading) and found this book to be really helpful for getting started with the basics, even though I have already chosen my research method and proposal. It comes in small bite-size chunks with a few gems to get you thinking. I'm a 'get it done quick' kinda girl, so this was great for my style of 'action' learning. If you're more of a deep thinker, this may not be for you.

This book was essential reading for me during my literacy specialist tutor training, and two years later it is still in regular use. If you want to check your use of grammar, wonder what word is used for truanting in South Wales, or are puzzled as to what a morpheme is, the answers are here. It never let me down when I wanted to check something. Not the cheapest or most portable book there is, but definitely the best.

In the preface, the author states that he has been told by some that this book is too difficult, by others too simple. I would characterise it as huge, as is a fruitcake, not perhaps in physical size, but in richness and complexity. First, it is well worth reading the book through, and mastering the content. Subsequently, use it as a reference book, as you encounter issues and theoretical perspectives in practice. It is easy to become blase about concepts, through over-repetition of their buzz words, and by lack of reflection, and certain terms become so by incorporation in organisational procedures, for instance. I picked this book because I wanted to enhance my perception with clients, since we can get so wound up with our beliefs systems that we might not realize what the other person might be thinking, so I have found that I can now see the signals to give me an indication about putting the client at ease.

I brought this for my husband and ended up reading it myself.I have never listened to the show either but my husband does so I brought it on the off chance for him for christmas.I started reading and saw so much of my husband that I couldnt wait till christmas to say " oh my god your like that". I think the style of writing is talkative, lively and a great book to pull out at dinner parties and keep in your downstairs loo as everyone will have an opinion.

I've owned this book for a matter of days but have been disappointed. I'm a psychology degree student. Most recent essay - "Consciousness". However, terms like "Access Consciousness; Phenomenal Consciousness; Monitoring Consciousness and Self-Consciousness" are not included. The term "pseudoseizure" is omitted...to name just a handful of words I've tried to look up. I was also disappointed by some of the definitions, finding them too vague. Perhaps I need to give this reference book a chance, but for now, I'm not impressed.
Perhaps I was expecting too much...?

The Oxford Handbook of Criminology is a very broad overview of a vast array of sources, with chapters averaging forty-ish pages and extensive bibliographies to each. It is very much a secondary analysis text to my eyes; a comprehensive collating of data that gives an overview of criminology that is second to none. The Oxford Handbook has been (for me) a far better introduction to criminology, and is written in a way that I find far more accessible. The fourth edition of the OHC is - furthermore - at the time of writing far descriptive of contemporary criminology. It was published in 2007 with the chapters being written as descriptive of contemporary criminology.

I decided to buy this book having read all the fantastic reviews on here, but was sorely disappointed. I am in the process of writing a postgrad literature review for my CIPD and have to say, this book was absolutely no help whatsoever. Maybe it works for academics, but for business students, I would avoid this like the plague. If you're after a book that gives you practical hints on how to get started with your literature review, don't buy this. I found the content and writing style to be largely theoretical and abstract, which made it difficult to follow or glean any quick pointers from. Having trawled through the whole sorry dirge I was left none the wiser by the end of the book and found much more useful and practical tips online.
