. Nella Last's War: The Second World War Diaries of 'Housewife 49'
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
from: Profile Books Ltd
November 16, 2006
I can only add to the unalloyed praise of others and wish that Nella Last could know what pleasure and enlightenment her "scribbling" would bring to others over 60 years later.
She writes beautifully and naturally, but what's most interesting is the way she changes as the war progresses. At the beginning she is sickly and weak, plagued with arthritis, and refers to a "breakdown" she had a few years before. But she determines to "do something" for the war effort and joins the WVS. From there she goes from strength to strength, and the evolution of her ideas is fascinating; she comes to see her conventional marriage to an old stick of a husband as "slavery". She's also very observant and perceptive of the people around her.
She ... Read More:

. Passing the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) and BMAT 2008 (Student Guides to University Entrance) (Student Guides to University Entrance)
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Felicity Taylor, Rosalie Hutton, Glenn Hutton
April 21, 2008
The guide kicks off with a lot of irrelevant information about general application to medical school, UCAS, personal statement writing etc - not useless by any means, but definitely not brilliant.
The real meat of the book is the practice questions, and I'm afraid to say that this is where it really falls over. The verbal reasoning questions are terrible, there are multiple typos, huge logical inconsistencies, many ambiguous questions and some of the answers are simply entirely wrong.
The other sections seem to be of a better quality, but on the basis of the second chapter, I really wouldn't bother with this book - no academic text (especially one with an emphasis on comprehension and critical thinking) should contain such elementary ... Read More:

. Wall and Piece
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: "Banksy"
November 09, 2006
Banksy's Wall and Piece is simply an amazing collection of his graffiti art all across the UK and the world. His unique style has won him international acclaim to fame. His artwork is not just vandalism but sends out a political statement which is bold and isn't afraid to mention things we would otherwise keep quiet. I first heard Banksy on a news website when he created another piece of work and then visited his website banksy.com, and since then fallen in love with his work. The other day I came across the book in a store and really enjoyed his collection of work. This is a must have book for any of those interested not just in art, but also those who have been shaped by the news in recent years.
To be honest, I am not a massive fan of art, or graffiti ... Read More:

. The Teaching of Science in Primary Schools
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Wynne Harlen OBE, Anne Qualter
July 24, 2004
Wynne Harlen has done a great job with this book. It is a comprehensive guide to teaching science in terms of; teaching and learning styles, assessment methods, use of resources and ICT to help childrens' learning, how best to use practicals (SC1) in science lessons, helping children to question and think scientifically for themselves, good cross curricular links. I am a primary science specialist PGCE student at the moment, and was given a long list of course text books for science and didn't have a clue as to which one to choose. Take it from me, choose this one, as my copy is well thumbed after only 6 months of my PGCE course.

. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Malcolm Gladwell
February 23, 2006
Sometimes decisions need to be made quickly. All of our knowledge, education, experience, reasoning, intuition, common sense and confidence must come together rapidly.
Malcolm Gladwell calls quick decision making thin slicing in his book: Blink. Thin slicing is the ability to focus on a small set of critical variables to make a quick decision rather than consciously considering every possible variable.
Many decisions are time dependent. Weighing the amount of information needed before making a decision, against the time available is a challenge.
Examples of when thin slicing is needed: combat, avoiding a car accident, or anything requiring an immediate decision. Another common name for thin slicing is thinking on your feet.

. The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Howard Cutler
November 08, 1999
I personally found this book very helpful and enjoyed reading it. It is nice to be able to see things from a positive perspective and this book helps you to do that. Although it is probably worth mentioning that none of the wonderful ideas in this book will work without alott of effort and self discipline. It covers attitude and philosophy and does not include any real techniques or methods, but there are other books that do, and i find this book to compliment them well.
If you have a problem with the idea of trying to be a better person and the effort that it involves, then you may not find this book useful.
This book is mostly just words.(no pun intended)
Although if you consider the harm that cruel words can do, then surely kind words can help ... Read More:
