. The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Tony Attwood
May 15, 2008
This remarkable book gives an incredibly clear account of asperger's and its impact on people around them. It is easy to read yet gives the most profound insights and cause for joy and optimism. A diagnosis of Aspergers is not the end of the world but a way of accessing the genius and talents that can go with it. If you know people who may be on the autistic spectrum it gives you a way of understanding and enjoying them and seeing the truth beneath a way of being that can make people hard to know. Reading the book has been an eyeopener for me, I have always enjoyed being with unusual people and now understand why.

. Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Daniel C. Dennett
March 29, 2007
I've been a Daniel Dennett fan ever since The Mind's Eye, a mind-opening book he co-authored/edited with Douglas Hofstadter. In similar vein, I was enthralled by Kinds of Minds; and Darwin's Dangerous Idea showed just how extensive and versatile a thinker Dennett is.
So I was surprised to be disappointed by Breaking the Spell. Maybe it's because I'm older and wiser, or maybe I was expecting this book to be something that it wasn't, but it just seemed to lack substance. The essential thesis of the book is that religious belief is no sacred cow, and should be open to the same level of scientific and philosophical investigation as any other sphere of human activity. This much could have been said in less than a page; and Dennett is engaging ... Read More:

. The Complete Book of Rules: Time-tested secrets for capturing the heart of Mr Right
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Ellen Fein, Sherrie Schneider
October 02, 2000
I believe this book comes from a good place in its intention to empower women, and indeed the advice may work, but not as claimed. As a professional dating coach for GetTheGuy.co.uk in London many women quote me `The Rules'. It appears to be game playing at its extreme, telling women to maintain a facade of being busy, interesting and mysterious. Why the authors have such low expectations of their readers that they assume they have to fake these things is slightly bemusing. Basically it is about appearing `Hard to Get'. Of course there's nothing wrong with being a little bit unavailable, so the author's advice - don't talk to a man first, end calls first, never accept last minute dates etc. - is by no means unfounded, but contains some fatal flaws:

. The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Sam Harris
February 06, 2006
As an atheist, I was drawn to this book through the endorsement of Richard Dawkins - an endorsement I find baffling. As a number of reviewers have noted this book does not remotely deserve to be bracketed with The God Delusion and other sober critiques of religious faith.
The biggest clues to Harris' agenda are revealed by the 'authorities' he invokes to buttress his opinions: the discredited pro-Israeli 'scholar' Daniel Goldhagen; the tub-thumping neo-conservative Thomas Friedman; the Zionist Alan Dershovitz (a man demonstrably shown to have manipulated historical sources in constructing a fervent defence of Israel), and Samauel Huttington.
It is not suprising given these bed-fellows that Harris allows himself to entertain the most bellicose, 'intolerant', ... Read More:

. Love Tactics: How to Win the One You Want
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Thomas W. McKnight, Robert H. Phillips
January 01, 2002
This book begins very well, with the intelligent observation that we "choose to be in love", and moves through various concepts with a wealth of well-observed common sense. Where it fell down most abruptly was with reference to what comes after kissing, becoming coy and indirect and concluding that anything further must wait until marriage, because "of course you want to get married!" and that any relationship outside of marriage is doomed... At this point, I immediately turned to look at the religious credentials of the authors, and was unfortunately not disappointed.
I also feel that it was all very well coming up with tactics which could be grouped together under the "keep 'em mean, keep 'em keen" variety, but there wasn't any advice on when to capitulate and become truly honest. ... Read More:

. Loving What is: How Four Questions Can Change Your Life
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Byron Katie, Stephen Mitchell
June 27, 2002
I whole heartedly agree with the previous reviewers..this book too has profoundly changed my life ! I have read quite a few self help books but Katie I have found is the only one so far that puts things in a real simple and down to earth manner. Not some airy fairy spiritual thing...the only way really for people to gain clarity over their seemingly negative ways is to discover the truth for themselves and this she does so brilliantly. I found The Power Of Now life transforming, this goes even beyond that..for those who still don't quite "get it" with the likes of Tolle, Dwyer, Virtue and so many others, including Law of Attraction books, they should definately give this book a go. I am also in the process of ordering her other books. She is truly a gift to the world and also the way in which she interacts ... Read More:

. Wall and Piece
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Banksy
November 03, 2005
Banksy's Wall and Piece is simply an amazing collection of his graffiti art all across the UK and the world. His unique style has won him international acclaim to fame. His artwork is not just vandalism but sends out a political statement which is bold and isn't afraid to mention things we would otherwise keep quiet. I first heard Banksy on a news website when he created another piece of work and then visited his website banksy.com, and since then fallen in love with his work. The other day I came across the book in a store and really enjoyed his collection of work. This is a must have book for any of those interested not just in art, but also those who have been shaped by the news in recent years.
To be honest, I am not a massive fan of art, or graffiti either but this is totally different! 5 STARS ... Read More:
