. The Prince (Penguin Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Niccolo Machiavelli, George Bull
February 16, 2004
This masterpiece of reasoning and good practical handbook on how to get ahead in real life if you happen to be already a man of some means, was a work of great humanity in an age when humanity was still considered disgusting and subserviant to the Lord above and his chosen servants on Earth. What a shot across the bows to all those religious hypocrites and Bible following automatons this must have been, then. Two elements surrounding this work's brave publication are crucial, I feel: One being that this was Italy, (as it became) and at its advanced stage of the great Renaissance, as we now know it, and the second being that it was written at a time which was just right to be publishing order challenging controversial works. After seeing the ... Read More:

. The Folklore of Discworld
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Terry Pratchett, Jacqueline Simpson
September 11, 2008
Dr. Gary Chapman has written a very practical book here that unlocks the doors to understanding the needs of your partner. Many books have been written on the subject, but I feel Dr. Chapman approaches these issues on understanding the opposite sex from a new and fresh perspective.
The key to successful relationships of any kind is understanding the other person better, and helping them to learn how to understand you and your ways.
I recommend this book to anyone wishing to enhance their personal relationships and further enrich their lives. A good book for everyone's bookshelf.

. The Study Skills Handbook (Palgrave Study Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Stella Cottrell
April 25, 2003
I am a mature student and was advised to buy this when I started my Access to HE course many years ago. I dutifully went and bought it alongside The Good Study Guide by Andrew Northedge and I have to say that this book is worth its weight in gold compared to the book by Northedge. This is not a comparison so I shall move on to say that every aspect of study - whether its organizing your time, planning backwards from deadlines, learning how you study best or even looking at personal development is covered in this excellent resource. It is designed in a user-friendly way which allows you to either read it all the way through or dip in and out of it depending on your needs. The book is designed in a clever way with charts, pictures, examples etc and it's glittered with funny ... . Eating Less: Say Goodbye to Overeating
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Gillian Riley
July 07, 2005
This is the only book I've ever bought twice after throwing all my 'diet' books out a few years ago after vowing never to go 'on a diet' again.
I've followed all the major commercial diets and even lost four stones on one of them, but they never once taught me how to eat healthily (and there's always a way to 'cheat', on all of them!). Hence, after coming off the diet I put all the weight back on and a couple more stones on top for good measure. Sound familiar?
This year I decided that I needed to sort my life out for once and for all and get healthy (oh and lose about 6 stones too!!), and I remembered this book and the common sense it seemed to make.
I'm relieved that I'll never have to go on a so-called 'diet' again (though I was tempted ... Read More:

. McMafia: Crime Without Frontiers
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Misha Glenny
April 03, 2008
This a frightening but fascinating book, which brings together the keen-eyed journalism Glenny displayed in the 1990s, with a tale of the kind of organised crime that touches us all, whether we know it or not.
Glenny tours the world, and wisely does not try his hand at thriller-writing as he does so. The stories, and their contexts, are fascinating enough to be simply laid out before us. In each case, the most compelling parts are the history and analysis of how that kind of crime took off, in that place and that time. While there are undercurrents that are common throughout, what stands out starkly are the location and era-specific details of the conditions that allow major crime to flourish. I would have liked to have seen something more about how these national and international ... Read More:

. The Fame Formula: How Hollywood's Fixers, Fakers and Star Makers Shaped the Publicity Industry
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Mark Borkowski
August 01, 2008
Okay, this is a book about the history of PR. The three reviews before mine are all five star reviews. When you click on the link to she the reviewers other reviews, not one of them has reviewed another book. It's just the friends of the authors, agent, editor, or publisher posting good reviews for this book. Its just PR!
I'm actually reading it, and while the history is somewhat interesting, the book does not deserve five stars. It's a 2.5 tops. This would make a good 200 page book. The author stretches out tedious stories to fill chapters. Like I said, I think it's mildly interesting because I know nothing of the history of PR. If you do, you may ant to skip this one.
