. Sociology Themes and Perspectives
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Michael Haralambos, Martin Holborn
February 08, 2008
I have been a Social Policy lecturer for 17 years and I've lost count of how many plagiarists I've caught using this book. The 'problem' is that students who plagiarise are almost always unfamiliar with the literature. The one book they have heard of Haralambos and it's so well laid out that it's easy to find the material to use in an essay. What students forget is that if it was easy for them to find the material, it's going to be easy - indeed, easier - for the tutor to find the same material. I have several editions of Haralambos on a bookshelf just a few feet away and they're invaluable.
Thank you, Michael Haralambos!

. The Rules of the Game
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Neil Strauss
July 03, 2008
I read, and absolutely loved, 'The Game' by the same author, Neil Strauss so I was looking forward to reading his second book, The Rules of The Game. Overall I would say that I enjoyed the book, and would recomend it, however there were some flaws, and it definitely wasn't as good as The Game.
Strauss attempts to deliver a one size fits all dating remedy for men across the world and the result is quite hit and miss. Some of the 'missions' that the book adivises one to attempt are pretty pointless, and will not be relevant for a lot of people. I also agree with some of the other reviews which mention the comic book style stories at the back of the book. These are quite fun to read but are nothing amazing, and they certainly don't ... . The Audacity of Hope
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Barack Obama
February 07, 2008
This is the first book by an aspirant politician, indeed the first political manifesto, (for that is what it is) that I have read cover to cover. (Perhaps, it occurs to me, I should read some of the works by serving British politicians, too, and not just rely on commentaries by journalists?) I bought the book the day after Barack Obama slipped up re-using the "lipstick on a pig" cliché, when, for the first time, McCain and Palin seemed to have achieved a significant lead in the polls.
Obama wrote this book to update his life story, including how he came to be elected senator for Illinois (he completed his first book "Dreams of my father" some ten years earlier), to offer an analysis of how modern American political life has ... Read More:

. The Prince (Penguin Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Niccolo Machiavelli, George Bull
February 16, 2004
This masterpiece of reasoning and good practical handbook on how to get ahead in real life if you happen to be already a man of some means, was a work of great humanity in an age when humanity was still considered disgusting and subserviant to the Lord above and his chosen servants on Earth. What a shot across the bows to all those religious hypocrites and Bible following automatons this must have been, then. Two elements surrounding this work's brave publication are crucial, I feel: One being that this was Italy, (as it became) and at its advanced stage of the great Renaissance, as we now know it, and the second being that it was written at a time which was just right to be publishing order challenging controversial works. After seeing the liberal benefits to man ... Read More:

. Overcoming Low Self-esteem: Self-help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioural Techniques (Self-help)
City Travel Guides > Books > Society- Politics and Philosophy
by: Melanie Fennell
August 26, 1999
This book is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which basically sets out to help you become aware of where you are thinking unrealistically (or just plain wrongly), and to replace these thoughts with helpful and more realistic ones.
I was really scared for a fair while that this book wouldn't help me, but actually it has, and loads. By about half-way through, I was daring to believe people actually loved me, I was approaching groups of people and joining in with the conversation, and being open about who I am - and starting to enjoy doing so, and not assuming everyone disliked me.
However, you need to know that this book is sometimes difficult to read, and to change will be hard. This is not a book that you "read". This is a book where ... Read More:
