I have been a Kernick fan since book one and have been looking forward to reading DEADLINE on my recent holiday. It didn't disappoint.

It's a fast-paced, well-characterised thriller, once again set around the grim streets and suburbs of London.

Right from page one, a Kernick trick I think, I was hooked. I read the book in a couple of days relaxing by the Pacific Ocean.

Twists and turns, a little bit of gut-wrenching violence, and a grandstand finish.

Mark Billingham has some serious competition !

This book is excellent. Parents, who want lasting discipline, in the true sense of the word [teaching], look no further. As other reviewers have said, there is no quick fix. If that's what you are after, God help your kids!

As an author, I also found the techniques and suggestions easy to pick up and assimilate.

It is relevant for school, home and life in general.

We can't get enough of this kind of material.

Here we have two narrators. One, a pleasant, measured, accepting, concerned, humane onlooker with no instinct to meddle. The other is deeply implicated, damaged and dynamite. The story is slow in building, drawing you in. A perfect recreation of the naughty nineties with topical explanations, wise words and hints of what is to come. Every sentence counts. Another classic Barbara Vine - a gift!

I first got a Rubik's cube when they came out in the early 80's and absolutely loved it. I used the first one so much that I had to buy a replacement within a couple of years. The action for these cubes was fantastic. 'Clicky' 'tight' but so easy and smooth to turn. Even though I could eventually solve the puzzle in a couple of minutes, I've never tired of it.

I was really pleased when they started to produce the cube again and was keen to buy a new one. I bought a new cube and was dismayed to find that the action and build quality was terrible. I actually dug out my remaining original cube to try and see what the difference could be and saw that the original design had little areas where the inner surfaces had open pockets or gaps. I was deeply cynical of this book at first because it sounds a bit dipsy and the actions involved make you feel more than a bit silly, esspecially sitting down to be hypnotised. But the CD is quite interesting because it does change the way you think - even though it may not make you truly confident in the conventional sense. I think what the CD does is give you access to a different persona which you can fit into...you imagine someone you know who is very confident (choose carefully because this works, bizarely) until ones true authentic self (ego) emerges and develops. After a month or so I found myself somewhat more confident esspecially in job interviews for example. I persisted with this book far longer than I should have - I could have been reading something worthwhile. Ploughed through to the half way point, expecting that something interesting must happen soon (no), not at all interested in what happened to any of the dull and one dimensional characters. I eventually skipped to the end to see what happened, which was what I was expecting. Saved myself a few hours and can now move onto something I might actually enjoy. Disappointing.

You will laugh out loud and you will warm to this writer from the start! It brings back memories of your childhood and all the sweets, TV shows and characters that go with it. I haven't read his other books but I will be buying them right away, and recommending this one to all my friends. Danny Wallace may seem a bit odd when you see him on the telly but this book gets you to the heart of a guy who is naturally very funny.

This was the first McCarthy book I'd read. I bought it based on a Wish List recommendation and I would just like to say thank you, thank you, thank you. Once I got used to the author's quirky style, it became a thoroughly enjoyable read. He uses suspense very well.
