Having read several other opinions I decided to set myself a challenge and attempt to write a review of this book without using the word 'bleak'. Oops.

The Road is a tale of a nameless father and son travelling along a road to an unknown destination in a world devastated by an unidentified apocalyptic event. The non-description in that sentance sums up how little description and discovery McCarthy gives us in the book, but in the same way the scariest horror films leave the terrible sights to your imagination, the titbits of information that are given and the overhanging sense of fear make The Road frightening and compelling.

Although this is the first Patrick Gale book I've ever read it certainly won't be my last. The story focuses on the inter-woven lives and experiences of a family held together by a parents' bi-polar disorder. Each of the characters are very individual, however the mental illness that they live with runs through them all and becomes more evident the further you read on. Gale manages to write about the emotive topic of mental illness without mushy sentimentality or judgements being evident. Excellant!!!

I bought this book, as i have just moved out of my parents house without any knowledge of cooking. I bought this book on a whim, and i have nearly done all the meals in the book. most of the ingredients u can find in a kitchen cupboard, which is great on a tight bugdet, all the meals i have cooked so far from this book are very tastey, and something i never thought i would be able to make, but the instructions are very simple and easy to follow. seriously recommend to any student or parents worried about their kids burnin down thier kitchen. great starter pack for any novice like myself.

Dawkins writes that "the argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes" (p.xxi) and that "We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes" (p.xxi). Yet, according to him, this book "is not science fiction; it is science" (p.xxi)!

Dawkins contrives to overlook the twin discoveries that:
1. the observable traits of organisms are mostly conditioned by the interactions of many genes;
2. most genes have multiple effects on many of these traits.

I picked this book up because I had nothing else to read and from the cover I assumed it would be some jokey 'woman goes to country side meets hialrious characters and learns to love it and herself'. I was ready to hate it. However, it was beautifully written and some parts were so sad. I disagree that the author is selfish and spoilt, she is simply someone like me who loves city life and loathes the country. I hope she gets back to London some day I really do.

Whilst this book resolves all plot lines and manages to bring to an end a complex story with multiple interwoven plot lines, it does so at the cost of style and flair, with the books written structure becoming a vehicle for presenting plot lines rather than a structure that was in any way enjoyable to read.

Other than to finish reading the series I cannot recommend this book. Indeed on balance after the first 3 or 4 of the series, the books become tedious and onerous to read, therefore I would not recommend starting it.

This book is not as dry as it sounds in the product description! You'd have to be a pretty bad writer to make anything to do with Henry VIII boring but this book adds a new twist.

Our "hero", Matthew Shardlake, is a hunchback lawyer that works for Cromwell around the time that Henry's third wife, Jane Seymour, died in childbirth. But Henry's problems are merely a background, the novel is concerned with the murder of one of Cromwell's officers in a monastery which Shardlake is sent to investigate. The description of life in the monastery and the life of the lay people that live in the nearby village is fascinating and just as interesting as the mystery itself. The characters are developed with the story and there's even a little romance.

The best book I have ever read so far. All human should read this book. KF is a remarkable writer of a story - all great characters and all good plots eventually making it believing.

Main characters are the Prior of Kingsbridge who re-create Kingsbridge with the help of its builder Tom and his son Jack. Aliena (Jack's wife) a strong individual fought every way to help brother Richard that was lost to an evil William. Other characters were Waleran, the Bishop, Alfred, Tom eldest son, Ellen, Tom's 2nd wife, and Jonathan, Tom's youngest son.

I love this book; the romantic style of writing and stunning photography makes you want to travel immediately!
There is good coverage of the whole world, including a decent section on the UK, and includes a wide variety of experiences from hang-gliding in Rio de Janeiro to ghost-hunting in York, to camel riding in Oman, and it also includes festivals.
It is beautifully presented with stunning photography and has experiences arranged by country in the index which makes navigating the book easier. It also includes an appendix with a few lines of useful information about each experience, for example a website.

This book is not one that provides much practical information for planning a trip, but is perfect to give inspiration for where to go/what to do next!
