I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. Despite finding the descriptions of the National Parks very tempting, the book has not yet persuaded me that California is the place ... Read More:

. Francesco's Italy

Thankfully i managed to record all four episodes of Francescos very entertaining Top to Toe series on Italy onto disc.
His ladish exploits in that gorgeous Alfa Spider made the series a more lite hearted affair to his magnificent Venice, and his influnce in being one of the oldest Venitian families opened doors into fabulous palaces and villas that are barred to all members of the public.
Naturally he could not spend too long in the north of the country but witnessing Lucca, Puccinis birthplace and Bolognia the oldest university in the world made what he did choose trully excelleny.Veronia was where Shakespeare based Romeo and Juiliet but Shakey never visited the place.
The highlite of the series for me was when ... Read More:

. Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure

This was an enjoyable book to read. It's a book that just goes to show how many truly interesting people there are out there on the internet. It's often a book about unbelievable coincidences and how taking a chance can take you all over the Globe. It's also a book about one man's attempt to avoid working, something I can sympathise with!
The pace of the book is good, particularly towards the end where the chapters are often only 2-3 pages long and it becomes a parade of entertaining, unusual and genuinely intriguing people. And it's definitely the people that make this book enjoyable and entertaining, rather than Gorman's need to complete this book. If anything, his constant attempts to engage our sympathy are a down point, if only ... Read More:

. "Time Out" Cheap Eats in London (Time Out Cheap Eats in London)
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
from: Time Out Group Ltd
February 01, 2007
Haha, it really is incredible - I never thought I'd find some of the best places to eat for less than a fortune in such a small book like that, but apparently I did. It is ridiculously easy to find the kind of place you want to eat (cheapest, closest to you, a certain cuisine etc), and the reviews consist of opening/closing hours, special menus, the highlights of the place, and critique on the food, service and location. It's incredible how accurate they are :) Definitely worth the buy.
