I had high hopes for this book but I found it to be both boring, lacking depth and patronising - to such a point that I feel she is boarding on dangerous parameters. The author comes accross as very smug which is off putting too.

The new Ferrata guide is probably the worst guidebook and I have ever tried to use it is extremely hard to follow they have invented their own grading system and it is repetitive. You are better getting the old guide which although it is out of date is much better and easier to follow and the grade can be relied upon.
They state that there are many grading systems in existence but they differ only in minor ways for example using numbers from one to six instead of letters so they are roughly comparable, they have invented a new system and assigned the roots in a seemingly arbitrary fashion I went up one route which my partner looked at would not go near, it were graded two in this book and the Germans told me that in their book it was a three/four ... I found this book the literary equivalent of looking at someone's holiday photos - lots of them. Admittedly I didn't get past Spain, the style and presentation obviously pleases several people, I found it boring and unreadable.

One of the best birthday presents I've ever received....

It's not a book to replace individual lonely planet guides, but is a brilliant way to chase away winter blues, or alternatively, if you're thinking about going away somewhere, to have a brief idea of the time to go.

I much prefer leafing through a beautiful book like this rather than researching "when to go" on websites. It is the "big picture" of a country rather than east/west coast specific, but that's all you want or need if you're planning a fantasy trip, or if you're just looking for some ideas.

I've got the hardbook version which I think is better than the paperback one as it somehow makes it more "special" (without sounding naff I hope).

This is a wonderful book about a truly remarkable, moving and literally tragic misadventure. I first stumbled across Donald Crowhurst's story through a terrific Channel 4 feature film, Deep Water, and was so captivated by it that I bought this and another account of the race (fellow competitor Bernard Moitessier's The Long Way (which, for the record, doesn't really touch on the Crowhurst story)).

The Bard himself could not have scripted a tragedy better than this. Crowhurst, a mercurial but fundamentally unremarkable director of a struggling electronics business, hits upon a means of saving his business and assuring his family's future: entering (and winning) the 1968 Sunday Times single-handed non-stop round-the-world yacht race.

I must have read this about seven or eight times now, and I just know I will again in the future. The author took on a real challenge when it comes to the chronological events of Project Apollo, and was able to condense it perfectly into an easy narrative, thankfully dodging the absolute minefield of unnecessary technical details. This is still the one I recommend to the conspiracy theorists as well...!

The Spanish section of the book is particularly strong, but I enjoyed reading about his adventures in Scotland too, and his battles with the planning system. A deserved bestseller, however I would have liked him to have learned a bit more perhaps - or maybe I'm just being niggly?
