. Principles of Helicopter Flight
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: W. J. Wagtendonk
March 01, 2007
This book is the technical bible for aspiring helicopter pilots. It is essential reading for pilots studying for either a private or commercial helicopter pilot's license. It goes into more detail than any similar book, and the material is explained in a clear manner. Although the detail is more than would be required to pass a private helicopter license technical exam, the extra information presented is still useful and informative.
To sum up, if you want to to learn to fly a helicopter, read this book. The book won't just help you gain your license - one day it may save your life.

. To the Ends of the Earth
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Paul Theroux
1994-05
In his Introduction Paul Theroux writes, "When something human is recorded, good travel writing happens." Theroux always records the human aspects of countries and people he meets along the way. He records the scene outside the train window or porthole like no one else. Close to poetic in some sections. I have read almost all of Theroux's books and when I picked up this one I was afraid it would just be excerpts from his travels and might be less than satisfying, the tales taken out of conntext. I was wrong. These stories are gems in their own right, timeless, and may inspire you to read more of his books, fiction and nonfiction.

. Into the Wild
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Jon Krakauer
1997-02
What might motivate someone to cut all ties with their family, to give away all of their money to charity, dispose of their belongings and adopt a life on the road? In this day and age our possessions and vocations end up owning us, so it comes as somewhat of a shock to the system to see that a young and intelligent man would decide to dispose of the normal trappings of life. McCandless is infamous for having starved to death in the Alaskan wilderness, though the book looks at what brought him there.
In fact McCandless had spent a year or more on the road, moving from place to place throughout western and northern USA, holding down some basic jobs for a short time before moving on, seeming to all as though he were just one more drifter ... Read More:

. Britain from the Air
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Guy de la Bedoyere
January 01, 2007
A number of people have reviewed this book, commenting on the fact that it was more about the author's inner feelings than the actual country. Anyone going to another country must be affected by their travels, otherwise what is the point of going. I found this book very moving and interesting and am looking forward to seeing the places mentioned as soon as finances permit, and hopefully meeting as many assorted "oddbods" along the way as possible.

. A New Life in New Zealand
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Paul Goddard
April 30, 2004
We bought this book as we wanted an insight as to what its really like to emergrate. Although the book did provide this, i would avoid reading this book if you are looking to be inspired. We found the narrative of the book to be fairly negative, which i suppose is understandable due to the problems the Goddards experienced. I think this book is most useful for learning from the Goddards' mistakes which to me, with the benefit of hindsight, seem glaring obvious.
By all means this book is worthy of a read, but is not suitable as a 'how to' guide on how to emmigrate to new zealand. For me, all this book did was leave me feeling that I am in need of some different points of view and some accounts of people who took a different tact to emmigrating ... Read More:

. The World's Most Dangerous Places: 5th Edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Robert Young Pelton
April 07, 2003
Whilst Lonely Planet Guides - and their various knock-offs - tell you the basics of travelling to the places you think you'd like to go to, DP tells you all about the places you really don't want to go to, what to do when you get there, and how to come back in one piece. Written by a motley collection of adventurers and war correspondents (who have a terrifying attrition rate - at least two contributors to previous editions are now dead) DP is not only a guide book to war zones and danger, but also an excellent grounding in the geopolitical realities of how those places got like that, and a guidebook to surviving the travails and difficulties of being a western traveller in the Thrid World. Where else would you find chapters on how to survive being kidnapped ... Read More:

. Frommer's New York City with Kids (Frommers With Kids)
City Travel Guides > Books > Speciality Travel
by: Holly Hughes
January 26, 2007
We used this guide when we travelled to New York with our 2 year old a couple of months ago. It was invaluable.
The best thing about it were the accurate descriptions and recommendations. The downfall of many a Guide book is when you turn up somewhere and it's either not there or its nothing like the description. It is doubly important that this doesn't happen when there are children involved and this book didn't let us down once the entire week.
The book has great sections on where to find local playgrounds and child orientated spins on all the major tourist sites. The restaurant section is particularly good, recommending a couple of places that I would never have thought of going but had both excellent food and that were great with children. ... Read More:
